And now for a bonus Friday afternoon post — because why not? Almost every day I get several messages asking whether I’m pregnant. People ask via comments, email, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and on rare occasions by carrier pigeon. All together that adds up to about 150 questions a month and roughly 1,800 over the past year. The pregnancy speculation even pops up in comment threads on posts that have nothing to do with babies, like room updates or infographics. It’s become a bit of a bump-watch phenomenon around here.
To clear this up right away: I am not pregnant. My womb is currently uninhabited.
It’s genuinely flattering and heartwarming that so many of you are excited about the possibility of our family growing. That excitement means a lot. That said, our situation is more complicated than a simple timeline for “trying again.” Because of complications we experienced in the past — you can read Clara’s birth story for full details — any future pregnancy for me would be considered high risk. There is a significant chance that a future child could face the same life-threatening complication that Clara had, and that reality influences our timing and decision-making. So while I appreciate the enthusiasm, please understand that nothing is guaranteed and that our choices are informed by caution and care.
I know the people who ask usually mean well — truly, I love the support and I imagine giving you a hug as I type — but asking someone if they’re pregnant can be a sensitive question for several reasons:
- It can imply you think they’ve gained weight. Everyone has days when their stomach looks different — sometimes it’s just a burrito, not a baby.
- It can unintentionally hurt someone who has struggled with infertility or suffered a miscarriage. I haven’t faced that personally so far, but I know it’s a reality for many and it makes the question risky.
- It can put someone in an uncomfortable position if they are pregnant but not ready to share the news. That’s another reason to be cautious with assumptions.
So consider this a gentle public service announcement: when the time is right and we are able to share about another pregnancy, we will absolutely tell you. We’ll wait until it’s safe and appropriate to announce, and once we do, we’ll be so excited you’ll know it. We want to make that announcement on our terms and at a time when it feels right for our family.
Until then, please picture me enjoying the present: sipping wine, eating sushi, and making the most of our non-pregnant life while celebrating the blessings we already have. I’m spending time with my sweet dog, my very handy husband with his nail gun, and our little miracle daughter, who currently knows the words to more Adam Levine songs than I thought possible. Life is full in its own wonderful, loud, messy way.
Thank you for understanding. I really appreciate the love, curiosity, and excitement that you share with us. If we reach a point where we can safely say anything, you’ll hear it straight from us. In the meantime, let’s try to be kind and considerate in the comments — everyone’s intentions are good, even when the subject is sensitive. And since speculation is irresistible, feel free to channel your curiosity toward other celebrity baby mysteries for now — like where Princess Kate is hiding that bump. I remember by 20 weeks I couldn’t even see my feet, so I’m impressed by anyone who can keep a bump under wraps.
