7 Can’t-Miss Experiences in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg

This year we took the kids to the Tennessee Smokies—the home of Dolly Parton—for our spring break. We spent a busy week enjoying family attractions, good food, and even a light dusting of snow. With Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park all within easy reach, the area offers a huge variety of activities. Below are seven highlights from our trip that are great for tweens, teens, and families with older kids.

We traveled with another family—four adults and six kids aged roughly 11 to 20—so everything below was vetted by tweens and teens. While we didn’t test each activity with toddlers, many of these attractions are family-friendly across a wide range of ages.

Why Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg?

We chose this destination primarily for Dollywood and because the surrounding area is packed with options. Think of it as a compact entertainment corridor tucked into the Appalachian Mountains: theme parks, scenic overlooks, restaurants, and kitschy roadside stops all within a short drive. Because there’s so much to pick from, you can tailor each day to your group’s interests and the weather. We visited in mid-March and experienced cold days in the 30s and 40s, but still had a great time and managed to enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities.

Keep in mind the area can feel touristy and busy—especially in warmer months—and prices can reflect that. Despite the crowds and occasional lines, we embraced the local charm and found plenty of memorable experiences for the whole family.

Below is a quick list of our top picks, followed by short descriptions and tips for each.

1. Dollywood

Dollywood was the centerpiece of our trip and a hit with everyone. The park has a mix of roller coasters, family rides, live entertainment, artisan demonstrations, and southern-style food. Our group especially loved the roller coasters—Big Bear Mountain, Wild Eagle, Thunderhead, and Lightning Rod all got rave reviews from the teens. We also enjoyed shows, shopping, and the legendary cinnamon bread, which deserves special mention. Expect lines during peak times; arriving when the park opens or using any available queue tools can help you see more in one day.

If you only have one day, prioritize the rides your group cares about most and mix in a show or two to rest between thrill-seeking sessions.

2. Ober Mountain

Ober Mountain in Gatlinburg is an all-season mountaintop park accessible by an enclosed aerial tramway—ideal on cold or windy days. The park offers a variety of attractions depending on the season, such as mountain coasters, ziplines, scenic chair lifts, and snow activities. During our visit we rode the tram, enjoyed the mountain coaster and ice bumper cars, and visited a small wildlife habitat where rangers shared stories about rescued animals. The enclosed tram was a key reason we chose Ober Mountain over other mountaintop parks on a chilly day.

3. Dolly’s Stampede Dinner Show

Dolly’s Stampede is a theatrical dinner show with horse stunts, animal performances, music, and family-friendly competitions between audience sections. While parts of the program are intentionally campy, the equestrian stunts are genuinely impressive and the meal is a hearty Southern-style experience. If you’re looking for a lively evening with a mix of action and humor, this is a solid choice.

4. Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Cades Cove is an 11-mile scenic loop in Great Smoky Mountains National Park that’s ideal for a relaxed morning drive. The loop offers pull-offs for historic cabins, short hikes, and wildlife viewing. On a cold morning with a light snow, it felt peaceful and picturesque. Note that vehicle access can be limited on certain days and busy during peak season, so plan accordingly and arrive early if you want quieter conditions. Also, some parking areas require a permit for longer stops.

5. Crockett’s Breakfast Camp & Sloppy Hog Burger Joint

Food highlights included Crockett’s Breakfast Camp in Gatlinburg, where the wait was long but the oversized pancakes, corned beef hash, and friendly service made it worthwhile. Another standout was Sloppy Hog Burger Joint, a casual spot between Pigeon Forge and Townsend known for inventive, hearty burgers—our group loved the combination of patties topped with pulled pork. Many of our days were so full of big breakfasts and lunches that we often cooked dinner at the cabin, but these two restaurants were memorable and worth seeking out.

6. The Island, Alcatraz East, & The Mountain Mile (Our Rainy-Day Activities)

We had a rainy first day, so we focused on indoor and covered attractions. Three spots filled the bill:

The Island

The Island is a family-friendly entertainment complex with shops, eateries, and attractions like a large skywheel and indoor simulators. It’s a nice place to stroll, snack, and let kids choose activities when the weather is iffy.

Alcatraz East Crime Museum

Adjacent to The Island, the Crime Museum offers interactive exhibits about criminal history and forensic science. It’s engaging for older kids and teens, with displays ranging from historical cases to modern true-crime artifacts and hands-on learning stations.

The Mountain Mile

The Mountain Mile is another mall-style entertainment area with arcades, shops, and family attractions. It’s convenient for charging stops, a quick arcade session, or an indoor diversion when rain moves in.

7. Our Airbnb

Our rental cabin played a big role in the trip’s success. Sharing a house with the other family gave everyone space and privacy while providing fun amenities for downtime—hot tub, games, a theater room, and even indoor mini golf. The layout worked well: kids used the downstairs game area while adults relaxed on the main floor. Splitting the house made the cost reasonable and created lots of opportunities for group meals, games, and memories.

Between shared dinners, games, and a spontaneous rap battle one evening, the cabin felt like the heart of the trip and kept everyone connected after busy days of exploring.
