Pregnancy After a Traumatic Birth: Recovery, Risks, and Support

Pregnancy Update: How I’m Feeling

Many of you have asked for a quick update on how I’m doing and how this pregnancy is progressing, so I wanted to share a Young House Life check-in. The short version: I’m so excited about this little bun. John is thrilled, and Clara can’t stop telling anyone who will listen that she’s going to be a big sister. Burger, our dog, seems ambivalent for now — but I’m sure once a sticky, crumb-dropping human arrives he’ll be delighted too.

How I Got to This Place

It took a long time for me to feel ready to carry another child. It also took longer to get pregnant this time than it did with Clara. Over that span of time, though, my feelings shifted slowly and gently. I’m more at peace with being pregnant than I ever expected to be, especially considering how overwhelming the idea used to feel for me. A few years ago that thought brought up a lot of anxiety and tears. Now, excitement and hope have gradually started to outweigh fear.

If you’ve wondered how I knew I was ready to try again after a traumatic birth experience, the honest answer is patience and time. The terror didn’t disappear overnight, but it became smaller and less controlling as joy and anticipation grew. My advice to anyone in a similar situation is to give yourself time and watch for moments when hope or excitement begin to outweigh fear. For me it took years — Clara will be nearly four when this baby arrives — but I finally reached a place of genuine readiness. I’m thrilled, grateful, and prepared for this wild, sometimes nail-biting ride.

Physical Symptoms and Appointments

Physically, I’m starting to feel kicks, which never fails to make me smile. My energy has been creeping back up lately, which feels like a reprieve. The doctors are keeping a close eye on everything and have reassured me that both baby and I are doing well — that news is incredibly comforting. A little kick can turn an anxious afternoon into one filled with relief and gratitude.

That said, I’m still dealing with persistent nausea. It’s improved somewhat since the worst weeks: I’d estimate I’m feeling sick about 30% less often than a few weeks ago, though I still find myself running to the bathroom multiple times a day. With Clara, the intense nausea tapered off around 17 weeks, so now that I’ve passed that point I’m hopeful the same will happen again soon. Last time it seemed to stop almost like a switch being turned off, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a repeat of that relief in the coming week or two.

Finding Out the Sex and Ultrasounds

We were hoping to learn the baby’s sex sooner, but the clinic was closed for Thanksgiving, so we’ll find out in early December. We can’t wait to tell our friends and family and then start planning the nursery. Just thinking about little nursery decisions makes me excited. I tend to watch dates on things — expiration dates, movie releases — and mentally compare them to the ultrasound appointment, hoping that by the time those dates arrive we’ll know whether to expect a boy or a girl.

This baby has already been a bit camera shy during ultrasounds. There have been appointments where the tech needed a particular measurement and I found myself doing jumping jacks, rolling on my side, or even running down the hall to get the baby to move into a better position. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t, but we’ve always left having gotten what was needed eventually. I’m hopeful the bun will cooperate at the next visit so we can get a clear look.

Gratitude and Community

Thank you to everyone who has checked in, shared nausea remedies, and sent well wishes. I’ve tried a lot of the suggestions — with varied results — but it was kind to have so many ideas to test. Your supportive messages and positive thoughts have been incredibly comforting on the harder days when doubt or worry sneak in. Knowing that so many people are rooting for us makes this experience even more special.

Overall, carrying this little one feels like a gift. There are still moments of anxiety, sure, but they’re balanced by a growing excitement and gratitude. I’m looking forward to sharing more updates — including the big news in early December — and to starting on nursery plans soon. Thanks again for all the love and curiosity; it means the world as we navigate this next chapter.
