Over the past year we’ve dabbled in a lot of side projects — a coloring book, a teacher’s lounge makeover, a podcast, new lighting designs, and a full beach house renovation. Behind the scenes, though, we’ve also been quietly working on something a little more playful and unexpected. It might be our most random idea yet, and we’re thrilled to finally share it.

We’re a shoes-off-at-the-door household, but sometimes bare floors leave our feet feeling chilly. And just as you decorate walls or arrange art to express your style, we started to wonder: shouldn’t your feet get to showcase personality too? That idea — plus a pun on our last name — led to the fictional concept of PETERSOKS. If you’re new here, yes: we like puns.

After a lot of playful imagining and a bit of pretend engineering (you might be surprised by how much thought goes into sock design), we pictured partnering with a manufacturer experienced in high-quality sock production. We imagined a team who already works with big-name sock entrepreneurs, and in our daydream that felt like a perfect fit — premium construction, thoughtful details, and lots of design possibilities.

In our imagined launch, PETERSOKS would arrive in a range of women’s and men’s patterns, with kids’ sizes coming soon. Each design would reference little things that make us smile — chihuahuas, tools, burgers, cacti, bikes, stripes — along with playful patterns inspired by home trends. If cacti are popular in decor, why not let them live on your socks?

We also envisioned continuing to submit new patterns, pushing the boundaries of what sock designers call the “sockvelope.” One fun idea was a collaborative, customizable line that borrows a jewelry brand’s mix-and-match spirit: choose your stone color, your placement, and your style. For a playful name we imagined calling them “KENDRA SOKS.”

We pictured folks wearing these socks to add personality to an office outfit, to lounge at home, or to throw on while tackling a renovation project. Fun socks can be an easy and inexpensive way to make a look feel more personal — a tiny detail with a big impact.

And now for the reveal: HAPPY APRIL FOOLS! We’re not actually launching a sock line. The PETERSOKS story was a playful bit of fiction created for April Fool’s, and we hope it gave you a smile. That said, if any of the images caught your eye, many of the quirky sock styles we photographed were sourced from a mix of shops and clearance finds — the ones that stay fun and unexpected.

We’ve pulled this kind of playful prank before, and it’s always fun to look back. If you want to revisit some of our past April Fool’s features, here are a few highlights:
- 2016 – An app concept for swapping decor items
- 2015 – A tongue-in-cheek idea about using voice tech for decorating
- 2014 – A playful household crafting challenge
- 2013 – A lighthearted music video we enjoyed making
- 2012 – A wildly exaggerated throne-like toilet idea
- 2011 – A mock plan for a child’s custom playroom
- 2010 – A humorous take on a “super classy” curb appeal project
- 2009 – A silly feature about perfect feline-inspired light fixtures
PS: Sock modeling is a lot harder than it looks — glad this isn’t real life.
