After lots of requests, we wanted to share how we built three porch-friendly projects: a planter transformed into a side table, a DIY dog food and water station, and simple floor pillows for our pup. These projects were created during a quick Home Depot materials-only challenge, so everything used could be purchased at the store or was repurposed from items we already had on hand.
The one rule for our build session was to use only materials available at Home Depot. While they don’t sell green ceramic side tables or dog accessories labeled as such, a few common items and a little creativity produced great results. A tube of construction adhesive, a plank of wood, and four inexpensive molding pieces became a compact, weather-ready pet feeding pedestal. It’s a simple idea that saves money and looks custom-made.
One of the nicest things about the feeding station is that it was essentially a tool-free build—no screws, nails, or hammers required. We used exterior semi-gloss paint to make the piece porch-friendly, matching a Glidden shade called Safari Green to a small Behr test container for a budget-friendly finish. The paint makes the pedestal durable in outdoor conditions and helps it read as a cohesive part of the porch decor.
For bowls we used dishes we already owned—small accessories not sourced from the store were permitted to finish the look. The yellow-green bowls complement the painted pedestal nicely, and we even checked with Burger’s vet to ensure the setup was pet-safe before regular use. Altogether the feeding station came together on a very small budget while remaining functional and attractive.
Next, we made two plush floor pillows from a single patio cushion. We picked up a comfortable $25 lounge chair cushion from the patio department at Home Depot and cut it in half to create two floor pillows. Each new cushion offers a soft perch for a small dog and provides easy-to-move seating on the porch.
Splitting the cushion meant each pillow cost roughly half the original price—about $12.50 apiece. We hand-stitched the open side of each half to finish them off; the process took about 15 minutes per pillow and required only basic sewing skills. The result is a cozy, budget-friendly pair of floor pillows that are easy to clean and store when the weather turns.
Finally, our planter-turned-side-table was a quick, colorful addition that gave the porch both function and personality. For about $40 total we bought a large green ceramic planter, a terra cotta saucer, and a weather-proof sealer formulated for terracotta. After sealing the underside of the saucer with Thompson’s Water Seal, we painted the top and sides a soft cream using leftover porch and floor paint. The sealer helps protect the paint from humidity and cold, so the finish stays attractive through changing seasons.
The finished planter table adds a bright pop of color to the porch and creates a handy surface for a book, a drink, or snacks. It’s a great example of how a few simple materials and a little paint can convert ordinary garden pieces into useful, attractive furniture.
All three projects demonstrate that small, inexpensive updates can make a porch feel more personal and functional. No complicated tools or advanced skills were needed—just basic supplies, a little time, and a willingness to repurpose.
