My husband and I bought our first house in May 2007 and immediately set to work repainting every room. The previous owners had four daughters and the rooms were decorated in an array of pinks and purples, so we wanted to give the whole house a fresh, cohesive update. The room we now call the “hearthroom” was the first one we completed, and we’re really proud of how it turned out.
We chose Behr’s Olivine for the walls — a bold change from the beige we were used to in our apartment. Painting the back of the built-ins in the same color helped integrate the cabinetry with the walls and made the whole room feel intentional and unified. Over the first few months we gradually added personal touches: books, a few well-placed accessories, and seating that invites relaxing. We were eager to finish this space because it opens directly from the kitchen, and we knew it would become a central spot for our daily life.
The previous owners used this room as a dining room, but my husband Ryan and I reworked it into a casual, comfortable space for lounging by the fire, playing board games, enjoying a simple dinner, or reading. It’s become our go-to room for relaxing at the end of the day. – Sarah
