Living Room Before and After: Melissa’s Makeover

When Melissa sent these dramatic before-and-after photos, we had to share them. For seating and major pieces, Melissa discovered EQ3 and ordered a sofa, loveseat and a distinct lounge chair that add personality and comfortable function. Smaller elements came from Ikea, including side tables, a fan, screen curtains, art and floating shelves that create practical storage and display without cluttering the room. Rugs, a lamp and other accessories were chosen from Target, offering budget-friendly accents that help the room feel cohesive and polished.

Textiles play a key role in the final look. Melissa updated pillows with dupioni silk in neutral shades and added pops of hot pink to bring lively contrast against the aqua walls and neutral furnishings. The silk pillows introduce subtle texture and a refined sheen, while the hot-pink accents provide energy and a playful note that keeps the design from feeling too safe.

Because the room benefits from skylights, the aqua wall color shifts beautifully throughout the day. Morning, noon and evening light each reveal different undertones and highlights, keeping the space interesting and dynamic. Friends often respond with a “wow” when they see the room for the first time, which speaks to the success of Melissa’s color choice and overall design direction.

The makeover also demonstrates budget-minded thinking: investing in a few standout pieces while sourcing accessories from affordable retailers lets the room feel curated without overspending. Melissa notes that swapping items from other rooms is a practical way to refresh the space when needed—an easy, cost-effective strategy to keep the look current without making major purchases.
