As we revealed on Saturday, we spent the last week soaking up the sun on a tiny island off Florida’s west coast called Madeira Beach. We’ve come back to Virginia with slightly sun-kissed skin, a boatload of shells, and lots of stories — beginning with a tour of the charming cottage where we stayed for the week.
From the outset we wanted something different from the typical beachfront hotel: more private, more character, and pet-friendly. That search led us to Island Paradise Cottages of Madeira Beach, an affordable collection of tasteful cottages just steps from the sand. The place felt like a small, well-kept community designed to make you feel like you stepped into a relaxed, tropical retreat.
Island Paradise has eight individual units of varying sizes; ours was a one-bedroom called the Gulf Mist. Each unit has its own entrance and a sun porch, and the grounds are landscaped to enhance the island vibe. Between the cheerful yellow cottages, a festive tiki hut and a pool with a hot tub, the communal areas are laid out to maximize that “you’re on vacation” feeling without feeling crowded.
Inside the Gulf Mist we found a comfortable living room, a compact but functional kitchen, a peaceful bedroom, a spotless bathroom, and a surprisingly large walk-in closet that we used to store our bikes. The layout and furnishings were practical and slightly vintage—more beach-functional than contemporary boutique—but perfectly suited for long days of beach time and relaxed evenings. The upholstery and surfaces handled sand and salt like a champ, and we appreciated not having to constantly worry about keeping everything pristine while enjoying the shore.
One charming detail was the bathroom tile: a familiar basketweave pattern that reads yellow with age. We learned the cottages date back to the 1950s, and many original finishes remain in place, which added a nostalgic charm that reminded us of other older homes we’ve loved. That vintage character made the place feel immediately comfortable and unpretentious — like a true home-away-from-home rather than a sterile rental.
Beyond the cottage itself, the location makes everyday island life easy: short walks to the beach, nearby places to eat, and quiet evenings on the porch listening to the breeze. The communal pool and hot tub are great for late-afternoon dips, and the tiki hut felt like a little social hub without ever being intrusive. The owners and hosts on site were welcoming and attentive, adding to the relaxed, neighborly atmosphere.
