Even though a full year has passed since you were finally completed, we still appreciate you as much as we did on day one. Those months of takeout and fast-food dinners were worth it. So here are a few thank-yous to the space that changed our home.

You became our home’s centerpiece. You’re beautiful in a way that makes the rest of the house look better just by association. Your style and function set the bar for the other rooms and gave us the motivation to finish the rest of the house with the same care and attention. A well-designed kitchen does that: it elevates the whole home.

Thank you for introducing flow into our home. Our open sightlines and wide doorways make moving through the space easy and enjoyable. You allow us to hear one another from across the house and to keep an eye on whatever’s happening elsewhere while we cook or clean. That sense of connection—one of the best benefits of thoughtful kitchen design—has made everyday life more relaxed and social.

Thank you for supporting our attempts at cooking. The extra prep space and well-planned storage have turned more of my experiments into successes. When things go sideways, your dishwasher and durable surfaces make cleanup much less stressful. A functional kitchen saves time, reduces frustration, and encourages more home-cooked meals—benefits we didn’t fully appreciate until we lived with them every day.

Thank you for turning us into storytellers. You were worth sharing, and once we posted photos and details about your design, the response was heartening. Documenting the remodel taught us about the value of planning, materials, and the design choices that balance beauty and practicality. Our experience has helped friends and readers who are planning their own kitchen remodels, and that makes the effort feel even more worthwhile.

Most of all, thank you for being finished. Designing you, selecting finishes, and watching everything come together was rewarding, but it was also exhausting at times. There’s a unique relief that comes with completion—the shift from project mode back to daily life where the space serves us rather than demands our time. That transition has made our home feel calmer and more settled.

When we hear about friends and family starting their own kitchen renovations, we’re excited for them. We understand the ups and downs of a remodel, so while we wouldn’t choose to go through it again ourselves, we love watching other kitchens take shape and admiring the creativity and problem-solving that goes into each one. And yes, we’re always happy to sample any leftovers they care to share.

So, dear kitchen, thank you. You’ve given us function, beauty, and a place where family and friends naturally gather. You’ve made cooking easier, hosting more enjoyable, and everyday routines smoother. We look forward to another year of meals, conversations, and quiet mornings spent in your light. Here’s to a delicious year number two.

Love, John & Sherry
