You can install a Ring Video Doorbell yourself—no electrician or wiring required. You don’t even need an existing doorbell. We recently installed one on our front door and it was one of the simplest DIY projects we’ve done in a long time.

Why Add A Video Doorbell?
Video doorbells have become a popular and practical home security upgrade. The Ring Video Doorbell lets you see and hear activity at your front door from anywhere via the Ring smartphone app. You can speak to visitors remotely—useful for neighbors or delivery drivers—and receive motion-activated alerts when someone approaches or drops off a package. If an unwanted incident occurs, the camera records video with sound, creating both a record and a deterrent. In short, it’s a smarter doorbell that adds convenience and peace of mind.
We chose a Ring model because they offer both wired and wireless options. Since we didn’t have an existing doorbell to replace, we installed the wireless version. The whole process took under 10 minutes and required no wiring or electrical work.
Installing A Wireless Ring Doorbell
Installation is straightforward. There’s a short video showing the process, and step-by-step instructions below with photos to guide you through the main steps.

Tools Needed To Install A Ring Doorbell
The Ring box includes most of the parts you need: screws, a charging cord, and a small screwdriver. You’ll also want a few common tools:
- Smartphone
- Power drill for pilot holes (optional but helpful)
- Screwdriver or power driver
- Pencil
- Small level (optional)
- Measuring tape (optional)
Step 1: Charge The Battery
Ring recommends fully charging the doorbell battery before installation. This can take several hours—ours took about eight—so start charging well before you plan to mount the unit. This model charges via a cord that plugs into the back of the device.
A front-facing blue light indicates charging progress; the light turns fully blue when charging is complete.
Step 2: Set Up The Ring App
While the battery charges, download the free Ring app to your smartphone and create an account if you don’t already have one. The app is how you view the camera, receive motion alerts, and complete the device setup. During setup you’ll scan the device’s QR code (found on the back of the doorbell under the mounting plate or in the manual) and connect the doorbell to your home Wi‑Fi, so have your Wi‑Fi password ready.
Begin the in-app setup by opening the menu, selecting “Set Up a Device,” and following the prompts. The app guides you through pairing and configuration so the process is very straightforward.
Part of the app setup includes scanning the doorbell’s QR code and connecting it to your Wi‑Fi network. Keep your phone and password nearby during this step.
Once paired, you can proceed to mount and secure the unit on your home.
Step 3: Attach The Doorbell Mounting Plate
Detach the slim mounting plate from the back of the doorbell and position it where you want to install the unit. Placement depends on your exterior surface—wood trim, siding, brick, or stone all require slightly different approaches. If you’re renting or prefer not to drill, there are adhesive mounts and specialty brackets available.
Place the plate about four feet from the ground, centered where you want it, and use a pencil to mark the four screw holes. A measuring tape and small level help ensure the plate is straight and properly positioned.
To prevent splitting wood or to prepare brick or stone, drill pilot holes before inserting screws or anchors. For masonry, use a masonry bit and, if necessary, a hammer drill. Ring provides anchors for hard surfaces—follow the included instructions for the correct hardware.
Use the longer screws provided to secure the mounting plate to your home. Then snap the doorbell onto the plate—it should click into place without force.
If drilling isn’t an option, a compatible adhesive or specialty mount can provide a secure no-drill installation—choose one that fits your Ring model.
Step 4: Secure Your Doorbell To The Mount
After snapping the doorbell onto the plate, use the short security screws provided to lock it in place. These screws have a special head to discourage theft, so keep the included driver in a safe place.
Tighten the security screws so the device won’t fall or be easily removed. A spare screw is usually included in case one is dropped or lost.
With the hardware in place, return to the Ring app to finish configuration.
Step 5: Configure Your Doorbell In The App
In the app you can set preferences like motion zones, notification types, and sensitivity. These settings are adjustable at any time via the gear icon in the app. It may take a bit of tweaking to reduce false alerts or optimize battery life, so try different settings until you’re satisfied.
If notifications are too frequent or the battery drains quickly, adjust motion settings or reduce notification types to extend battery life.

Is it easy to install a Ring Doorbell?
