I’ve been meaning to share a roundup of a few thrift and bargain finds, so here are four recent purchases that I’m still excited about. Technically there are nine items in total, because I picked up six of one piece—but who’s counting when the finds are this good?
The first treasure is a gilded pineapple vase I discovered at Goodwill for $4. What drew me in was the hexagonal pattern molded across the body of the vase: it reads pineapple, of course, but to me it also feels delightfully “bees.” The antique gold finish is subtle and slightly timeworn, not overly shiny, which gives it an authentic, vintage vibe. It’s the kind of small accent that looks deliberate, not decorative in a kitschy way.
Matching jars a friend sent over ended up pairing perfectly with the vase. The lids share a similar antique-gold tone and even feature tiny bees, which felt like a sweet, serendipitous match. The jars have a pleasing criss-cross glass texture that catches the light just enough to look interesting without being flashy. I keep the vase and jars on the desk beside my computer, so I can glance at them between tasks and get a little burst of joy—yes, I actually do smile that often when I look over at them.
The second item is a small ceramic speaker dock we ordered from West Elm the moment it became available. It was back-ordered for a bit, but when it arrived we were thrilled. It’s a more affordable alternative to larger stereos and docks, and the sound quality has been pleasantly surprising. The white ceramic animal figure on top gives the piece personality and humor—he’s become a cheerful presence on the desk and doubles as our office music companion. We named him Humphrey, because he has a personality that fits the name perfectly. Having a compact, stylish speaker on the desk has made working and typing away at the computer feel a little more festive.
Third on the list: I couldn’t resist grabbing six matching mugs at Marshall’s for $2.99 each (they had been $8 originally). I’ve always lived with a mismatched mug collection, which I liked for its eclectic charm, but getting a full set of matching mugs felt grown-up in the best way. It’s nice to know that when we have family over—John’s parents or my parents—we can all sip from the same mugs. It’s a small thing, but it makes everyday rituals like morning coffee or tea feel a touch more intentional. Fun fact: these are the first pieces of “china” we own that actually have a maker’s mark stamped on the bottom. When we registered for our wedding, we kept things simple and practical, so this feels like a little upgrade to domestic life.
Admitting that matching china makes me feel more grown-up might sound odd, but it’s honest. Little purchases like these—soft towels, a nice sheet set, or a coordinated set of dishes—can make your home feel complete in a subtle way. For me, these mugs are one of those purchases that brings a quiet satisfaction every morning.
Finally, I rescued a small thrift-store rocking horse from Goodwill for $1. He was about a foot long and came wrapped in a very country-style painted finish and a glued-on raffia wreath that had left globby adhesive streaks. I didn’t take a before photo, which I regret, but the horse looked roughly like those classic painted toys with too many decorative details. I named him Bosley and set to work removing the raffia and scraping off the glue with an X-Acto knife. Once the surface was reasonably smooth I applied a few coats of spray primer, then finished him in a deep charcoal spray paint I already had on hand.
The result is a streamlined, modernized piece that still retains a playful spirit. Bosley is currently perched on the living room desk, but I imagine him traveling around the house—perhaps someday ending up on a shelf in Clara’s room or on a dresser in the playroom. He’s just the right size for a Barbie, and part of the reason I picked him up was the hope that Clara might one day use him for imaginative play. So far she hasn’t shown much interest, but I’m keeping him in rotation because the idea of seeing a Barbie riding him is an irresistibly charming possibility.
