From handmade invitations to homemade centerpieces and self-curated entertainment, we leaned on friends, family, and a lot of elbow grease to keep things personal and budget-friendly. Hosting the event at our house meant money that might have gone toward a rented venue could instead be invested in home upgrades that continue to benefit us.
One practical upgrade was replacing our jagged slate patio with a cobblestone paver patio. The new surface provided a stable, attractive space for a large wooden buffet table, a grilling station for our family chefs, and an enduring outdoor living area that we use year after year. Practical investments like this turn a wedding expense into a long-term improvement for everyday life.
We also repaved our gravel driveway to create a smoother, safer surface for guests in heels and to provide an ideal spot for the photo booth we rented. The wide turnaround area in the back kept the celebration private and comfortable. An unexpected bonus: we no longer spend days weeding the driveway—another small long-term win from hosting the wedding at home.
While we hired professionals for the major landscaping and paving projects, almost everything else was DIY with help from family and friends. John’s cousin officiated the ceremony, a close friend played the guitar for the processional, and relatives ran the grill. For table settings, centerpieces, bouquets, custom lighting, favors, and our wedding slideshow, we embraced handmade touches and personal details.
