Remember when we mentioned that HGTV visited our home to film an episode of Rate My Space? The episode is finally scheduled to air this week. Mark your calendar for Thursday, Dec 18th at 9pm e/p and plan a cozy night on the couch (or set your DVR) to catch the show. We’re excited and admittedly a little nervous to see how everything turned out on screen.
HGTV’s Rate My Space grew from a popular website where people post photos of their rooms to get ratings and feedback from other users. The television version takes that concept and turns it into a makeover show: producers find rooms with low ratings, then redesign them using inspiration from highly rated spaces. In our case, the producers chose our master bedroom as an inspiration room because of its “spa-like” qualities — a compliment that made us blush. It’s flattering to see our space recognized for creating a calm, restful atmosphere.
We haven’t watched the final footage yet, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we don’t appear too awkward on camera. It’s a strange feeling to see yourself filmed in your own home — we don’t expect to host a show, of course, but we do hope we come across as coherent and not stumbling over our words. The producers mentioned we might be in the episode for only three or four minutes, which is a relief, but also makes those minutes feel extra important. Still, no matter how brief our segment, we’re thrilled to see how the makeover team interpreted our style and how they completed the room we helped inspire.
When the crew filmed, they were just beginning to paint and make changes, so seeing the final reveal will be particularly rewarding. It’s fun to compare the before and after and to notice thoughtful details that transform a space — lighting, textiles, paint color, and layout can all contribute to that calming, spa-like feeling the producers liked in our master bedroom. We’re eager to see which elements they kept, which they adapted, and what new ideas they brought in.
