Mantle Makeover: Stunning Before and After DIY Fireplace Update

The Challenge: An Oddly Shaped Concrete Mantle and a Giant Mirror

Framing the Oversized Mirror

Finding an affordable framed mirror that fit the scale and budget proved difficult, and removing the heavy, existing mirror was not an appealing option. Jacky’s solution was clever and resourceful: she built a wood frame directly over the mirror. She found salvaged molding at 35 cents per foot, cut 45-degree miters for the corners, and stained the pieces a rich ebony tone. Rather than struggling with permanent fasteners, she installed the frame using double-sided tape—advice she picked up from a local hardware store employee. The tape held the frame securely and allowed for an easy, non-destructive installation.

Results: A Polished, High-Impact Makeover

The result is a refined mantle wall with a posh-looking framed mirror and a bright white mantle cap that masks the original concrete form.
