Patio Progress: Functional Over Fashion
Don’t get too excited — this is more about practical progress than a dramatic style overhaul. We retrieved our old spray-painted metal and glass coffee table from our first house’s living room; it had been sitting at John’s parents’ place after they used it while their house was on the market and then it ended up tucked away in storage for a while. Once we realized we didn’t have a spot for it inside, it made perfect sense to put it on the patio, since a lot of outdoor furniture is the same spray-painted metal and glass style.
The table isn’t an exact match for the space, but it works. It’s perfect for resting my admittedly pale, often-neglected legs, and it’s handy for setting down drinks, snacks, or the occasional stack of magazines while we’re outside. Sometimes you just have to work with what you already own — a thrift-store find or an old hand-me-down can be exactly what a casual outdoor area needs until an intentional upgrade happens.

One happy surprise this season has been the hydrangeas in the background. We watched the buds wondering what color they would open into; we guessed white at first, but they surprised us with vibrant blue blooms. At the center of our current patio setup is a tiny whale-shaped baby pool that a friend gifted us — she had the same one as a child. Clara adores it. As a cautious parent, I slid several towels under the pool so it’s not too hard on the little one’s swim-diapered bottom. Simple, practical solutions like that make the space usable and comfortable for a toddler, and the whole family ends up enjoying it.
One lesson the patio has taught us is that outdoor spaces don’t need to be fully styled to be enjoyable. A mismatched table, some hand-me-down chairs, and a whimsical baby pool are all you need to create a relaxed, happy spot. It’s proof that functionality and comfort often matter far more than perfect coordination.
Our backyard has been filling in and transforming over the last few months. The left side that looked sparse at first has become much greener and fuller, and the right side has thickened up with new growth as well. It’s amazing to see how fast a yard can change in a single season once plants settle in. The overall effect is lush and a bit wild — we jokingly call it “the jungle” sometimes — and both Burger and Clara love exploring among the plants.
One pleasant surprise was discovering that an old, unidentified bush along the fence turned out to be roses. I’m not a plant expert, so I’m not 100% certain, but the blooms look like roses and they add a lovely touch to the yard. There’s also plenty of monkey grass along the borders, which tickles my legs as I walk by and helps soften the edges of the beds.
