How We Transformed Our Front Door with Valspar’s Fabulous Red
After several coats of paint, our front door finally achieved the bold, welcoming look we wanted. We used Valspar’s Fabulous Red in a semi-gloss exterior finish for durability and shine, and while it took five coats to fully cover the previous black paint, the result was absolutely worth it. If I could do it again, I would prime over the black first to reduce the number of finish coats, but patience and perseverance paid off.
Painting the door was surprisingly meditative, especially with a lovely view to enjoy between brushstrokes. Our flowering cherry tree in the front yard provided a cheerful backdrop while we worked, making the project feel less like a chore and more like a small home celebration.
The color decision came down to contrast. With an all-brick facade, many red swatches risked blending too closely with the reddish-brown bricks, which would make the door fade into the house rather than stand out. We chose the brightest, most vivid red in the group so the door would read as a distinct focal point. In short: a brick house can absolutely look great with a red door — just pick a red that’s brighter and redder than your brick.

To give a full picture of the exterior palette we settled on, here are the complementary colors we used alongside the red door. We kept the brick as the main material, added tan trim for contrast (Valspar’s Lyndhurst Stone), used black for shutters and the door stoop (Glidden’s Dark Secret), and finished with Valspar’s Fabulous Red for the door. The result is crisp, classic, and clean — a balanced combination of warm and bold tones.
Practical tips from our experience:
- Prime dark surfaces before applying bright colors. Priming can minimize the number of finish coats required and improve coverage.
- Choose exterior semi-gloss or gloss for doors to improve weather resistance and ease of cleaning.
- Compare swatches against your brick and trim in natural daylight to ensure enough contrast for the door to stand out.
- Allow sufficient drying time between coats, and be prepared to apply multiple thin coats rather than fewer thick ones for the best, longest-lasting finish.
