What began as a straightforward swap of an old sectional for a new sofa turned into a full rethink of our living room layout. One of us is more excited about the change than the other, but both of us are adapting to how the updated furniture shifts traffic patterns and sightlines. This week we’re sharing the decisions we made to reinvent the space so it works harder for everyday life, plus a detailed pro and con breakdown of the countertop materials we’ve lived with across three kitchens. We’ve enjoyed each option for different reasons, but we also have regrets and lessons learned we hope will help you avoid the same mistakes. I also ran into a few hiccups with my meal-kit experiment that might change how I use those services going forward.

What’s New
- Above is a sneak peek of our updated living room featuring the new sofa we bought. We chose the 93″ length in a steel fabric that appears darker in person than online. More photos and a full post will follow once we capture shots in better light.
- To complete the seating area we added new chairs and marble side tables purchased recently. The chairs are comfortable and scale well with the sofa; the current marble tables are a temporary solution while we consider a larger piece that can support a lamp. If we swap them out later, they’ll move to the beach house.
- One of the meal-kit dinners we salvaged during the week was a Roasted Vegetable Tikka. It was flavorful, filling, and one of the better meals we made from a kit, though our overall experience with deliveries has had mixed moments.
Kitchen Counters
- Our island features Cambria quartz in the Brittanicca pattern, a marble-like design we love. It’s been low maintenance and still looks as good as the day it was installed.
- The perimeter counters are a matte-finish quartz from another manufacturer in a concrete-inspired tone. The matte finish gives a soft, modern look but can show subtle marks like temporary water spots that are difficult to photograph.
- Across our projects we’ve used Corian, granite, quartz, and butcher block at different times. Each material has distinct benefits: quartz for durability and low maintenance, Corian for seamless appearance, granite for natural variation and heat resistance, and butcher block for warmth and refinishing potential. Your priorities—durability, maintenance, appearance, or budget—will determine which material is best for your kitchen.
- We’ve also used bright white Corian in a previous kitchen renovation. Corian delivers an ultra-clean, seamless look and the installers were able to blend seams so well they almost disappeared.
- From our very first kitchen remodel we installed granite that held up well but required some care to remove stains and maintain sealant over time. Each counter choice has trade-offs, and maintenance expectations should factor into your decision.
- At our beach house we’re installing butcher block counters. The perimeter is nearly finished, and we still need to add a larger island slab with a sink cutout and an overhang for seating. Butcher block adds warmth and can be sanded and refinished if it becomes worn over time.
We’re Digging
- We raised two beds using six-inch risers to improve bedside table height and create under-bed storage. The risers are solid and make the room feel more proportionate with the side tables we chose.
- To hide the riser hardware and neaten the look we added 18″ bed skirts. They’ll need pressing once we have an iron at the beach house, but they already tidy the visual plane around the bed.
- For TV viewing, we recently watched a British drama/mystery titled “The Five.” The series is compelling though the trailer doesn’t fully convey the depth of the storytelling.
