When Kathy shared photos of her kitchen transformation, we couldn’t help but admire the results. Below is her note describing the process and the choices she made:
I wanted to send along before-and-after photos of our recent kitchen redo. I read this blog regularly and find so much inspiration here. We used a tutorial on painting cabinets as a starting point. Rather than replacing the cabinets (we considered the Ikea option), we painted the existing pickled whitewashed faces a sophisticated solid gray (Fieldstone by Benjamin Moore), while the walls were painted Winter White, also by Benjamin Moore.
We then hired a contractor to take care of several things: raise the cabinet boxes up to the lowest portion of the ceiling, install a new sink and faucet and exhaust fan, add a white subway tile backsplash, lay gray marble-look tile on the counters, and install a white shelf beneath the newly raised cabinets where the old cabinet bottoms used to be. Choosing tile that imitates marble instead of a single stone slab saved us a significant amount of money. We also reused the original brass hinges, spray-painting them silver instead of buying new hardware for $150 or more.
The overall cost wasn’t cheap, but it didn’t break the bank either — materials and labor came in at about $1,600. The sink, exhaust fan, backsplash tile, counter tile and white shelving were all purchased from a major home improvement retailer. Thanks for looking! – Kathy

The transformation is striking. At first glance the color palette still feels familiar, but the overall impression is entirely different: crisp, refreshed, and much more finished than the builder-grade original. Painting the cabinetry from the faded pickled whitewash to a clean, contemporary gray instantly updates the room. Raising the cabinets to meet the lower edge of the ceiling adds height and visual polish, and the marble-look counter tile brings a sense of luxury without the cost of a full stone slab.
Installing a subway tile backsplash complements the painted cabinets and brightens the space, reflecting light and offering a classic look that ages well. The new sink, faucet and exhaust fan improve function while also contributing to the room’s updated aesthetic. Replacing or refinishing hardware can be one of the most noticeable changes in a kitchen; in this case, spray-painting the original hinges silver gave a refreshed, cohesive appearance without the expense of purchasing new hardware.
From a cost perspective, this remodel is especially notable. Full-scale kitchen renovations that include new counters, backsplashes, fixtures and rehung cabinets often top $5,000 or more. By strategically selecting materials and making smart labor decisions, Kathy kept the renovation affordable while achieving a high-end look. Choosing tile counters rather than a single slab, reusing existing cabinet bases, and painting instead of replacing cabinetry were all effective budget-conscious moves.
