We’re excited to share a recent visit to a beautiful local home, with plenty of photos from our tour. This house, which was featured in Domino magazine last summer, is owned by Katie Ukrop, who generously welcomed us in and showed us around.
Katie is well known in Richmond for her gallery, Quirk, which has since become the Quirk Hotel, and her warm personality makes her a beloved figure in the community. Her entryway sets the tone for the rest of the house: grand, welcoming, and grounded by painted wood floors that span the entire first floor, shifting in pattern and tone from room to room. Katie had her original floors sanded and painted while she was away, and local artist Sunny Goode—known for her detailed floor stencils—handled the design, leaving a joyful surprise for Katie upon her return.
The stenciled floors pair beautifully with delicate, airy furnishings sourced from specialty shops and mainstream stores alike. A marble fireplace and lofty ceilings add to the serene, dreamy atmosphere Katie has created throughout her home.
A large bay window fills the living area with soft, natural light, emphasizing the calm color palette and thoughtful styling.
Adjacent to the living room is a sophisticated sitting room with built-in bookcases and another fireplace. We admired the Oly light fixture, the elegant pocket doors, and the painted border on the adjoining dining room floor—all details that make each space distinct while remaining cohesive.
Katie favors soothing symmetry in her rooms. In one sitting room she balanced a radiator beneath the left window with a parson’s desk under the right, creating both visual harmony and a practical workspace. A soft blue bird painting above the fireplace echoes the blue tones in the painted floors and reflects pieces represented by her gallery.
The house’s calming effect comes from a muted palette and feminine accents. Pale pink linen pillows and glossy white accessories keep rooms serene, while brighter pinks—like the ottoman fabric—and quirky decor, such as a ceramic deer head, add personality and playful contrast.
Katie blends antique and modern pieces effortlessly. An ornate chandelier hangs above a sleek lacquered dining table—this mix of eras creates a fresh, collected look that feels lived-in and curated at once.
The kitchen is cheerful and highly functional, featuring simple white cabinetry, beadboard backsplash, and abundant built-ins that keep the space organized—essential for a household with two growing children and a busy family life. Framed prints of pink mixers add a charming, gallery-sourced touch above the backsplash.
White ceramic collectibles appear throughout the home, grouped on windowsills and shelves for simple, elegant displays. A cluster of white pottery above the cooktop becomes a subtle focal point that enhances the kitchen’s light, airy feel.
Storage is abundant and well thought out—the built-ins make it easy to keep everything tidy. The cut-out chandelier in the kitchen provides a delightful decorative moment that complements the practical layout.
A cozy sunroom continues the theme of built-ins and relaxed styling, with green plants adding life and color. Katie’s dog, Charlie, happily lounges on a hot-pink floor pillow against the blue-painted floors—an endearing scene that underscores the home’s comfortable, family-friendly design.
A painted and distressed hutch in the sunroom mirrors the soft blue floors and holds a casual collection of mixed white pottery, reinforcing Katie’s consistent approach to color and texture throughout the house.
Katie’s home feels like a breath of fresh air: thoughtful, livable, and lovingly styled. The muted palette, mix of old and new, and practical storage solutions make it clear how a family—including two kids and a dog—can comfortably inhabit such an elegantly soft space.
