Kitchen renovation bargains like this are rare, and this one is worth sharing. Below is Christina’s account of how she and her husband completed an affordable, high-impact kitchen makeover with careful planning, bargain hunting, and a lot of DIY work.
We still have a few finishing details to complete, but I couldn’t wait to share our super affordable kitchen transformation. My husband Trevor and I handled all the labor ourselves, which saved a lot, but we also hunted for deals and used several low-cost or free items to completely reinvent our tiny kitchen. The “before” was pretty bleak—the old ’70s wall oven and cooktop made the space feel dated—but we removed them and installed a white glass-top range that a friend gave us after upgrading.
We added an over-the-range microwave that we found on sale for $160, and Trevor removed the old cabinets and the outdated soffit that ran above them. For the new cabinets we chose white stock cabinets from Lowe’s, which ran about $900. To brighten the counters and keep costs down, we swapped the dark faux-wood surfaces for economical stock countertops from the same store for approximately $70.
We also replaced the worn white linoleum with wood-look laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators. The laminate was about $0.68 per square foot, and we extended the new flooring into the living and dining areas so the whole main level feels cohesive. Including the underlayment, the total for redoing the floors across the three rooms came to just $268. Finally, we painted the kitchen using shades we found on a popular design website: Ruffled Feathers and Eastern Lighthouse by Glidden, which helped give the space a fresh, contemporary feel.
When you add everything up—labor done by us, the free range, the sale microwave, the budget cabinets and countertops, affordable flooring, and paint—our little kitchen received a major makeover for about $1,400. It’s proof that thoughtful budgeting and smart shopping can produce big results without spending a fortune. – Christina
