We believe a home should evolve with a family’s needs, and while rooms often change over time, this kitchen and its adjoining sitting area finally feel finished. Over the past couple of years we’ve made a few subtle updates—a new glass bubble chandelier that feels like a beach sunset and the perfect seating for the cozy nook—and since then the space has held steady. Small accessory swaps happen (yes, we recently got a new toaster), but for the most part this area now functions exactly as we hoped: a comfortable, efficient hub where our family cooks, eats, chats, crafts, and relaxes together.
Because older posts on our kitchen didn’t reflect these refinements, this updated tour felt overdue. Our goal here is practical: to share what actually works in a compact, multiuse kitchen so others can adapt ideas to similar spaces. This room wears many hats—family entry, laundry spot, storage for daily gear, a place for adults to hang out while kids play or work on crafts upstairs—so functionality has been the driving force behind most choices.

A Truly Multi-Function Space
The kitchen really is the heart of our home. Located centrally in our floor plan, it’s where each day begins and ends: breakfasts, evening dinners, homework sessions at the kitchen table, and lazy weekend lounging on the sofas. It’s also the main entry point for our family, so it doubles as a mudroom and landing zone for backpacks, jackets, and everyday shoes. The adjacent porch provides extra storage for outdoor cooking gear and shoes, which helps keep the main kitchen clutter-free.
Because the room fulfills so many functions, storage and surface planning were essential. Shelving, dedicated zones for backpacks and jackets, and thoughtful placement of the dining table (we preferred a table over an island for face-to-face meals) all help the space work for everyday life rather than just for show.
Kitchen Before & After
We love before-and-after transformations, so here are a few of the most helpful comparisons from our renovation journey. Early on, a window was converted into a door to connect the kitchen to the practical porch area—a change that dramatically improved daily flow and storage options. Over time, the palette, layout, and furniture choices evolved until the kitchen and sitting area felt cohesive and intentional.
Early arrangements were functional but temporary as we learned how we actually used the space. Over months and years we refined furniture placement, lighting, and storage so the room supports cooking, dining, and lounging without feeling cramped. One design choice we made intentionally was a dining table rather than an island. For our family, sitting in chairs around a table encourages conversation and connection in a way island stools rarely do. Layout choices like that should reflect how you want to live in your home, not just what’s trendy.
A New Chandelier
The glass bubble chandelier became an instant favorite—its soft, warm shapes feel both modern and playful and help unify the kitchen and sitting area. Small decorative choices like this, along with fresh flowers and seasonal accents, make the room feel liked-in and welcoming.
We often pick up unexpected finds—like a bouquet left along a trail—and use them to brighten the kitchen for photos or dinners. Little moments like that help a home feel joyful without much expense.
Patience Pays Off
Many neighbors admitted they couldn’t imagine how this house could work when they first saw it. We, however, felt the potential and gave ourselves time to test, adjust, and live in the space before committing to major changes. That patience allowed us to make informed decisions—what to renovate, where to add storage, and how to arrange furniture so the kitchen truly serves our daily life. Our biggest tip: don’t rush a kitchen renovation. Live with the space first, learn what you actually use, and then make targeted changes that will last.
Looking Beyond The Kitchen
Because the kitchen opens directly toward our bedroom, we added storage and floating shelves to visually extend the living area and avoid exposing private bedroom elements. Thoughtful transitions like built-ins and shelving help adjoining rooms feel connected and intentional rather than disparate.
