How to Find an Affordable Sleeper Sofa

Guest Bedroom to Office and Playroom Makeover

After recently sharing that John would be joining the blog full time and mentioning a full-scale guest bedroom to office/guest-bedroom/playroom makeover, here’s a clearer look at how the space evolved. Short version: we needed a sleeper sofa, fast.

When we moved in the room was a fairly blank slate. A few modest updates made a big difference: replacing the ceiling fan with a flush-mount fixture, painting the walls a neutral tone, adding crown molding, staining the floor a richer mocha color to match the rest of the house, swapping valances for clean-lined roman shades, and bringing in a hand-me-down bed dressed with fun linens and a DIY upholstered headboard. Even the wall art was made on a budget.

We loved that guest bedroom and it served us well for years. But when we needed the room to function as a two-person office plus a play area for our child while keeping the ability to sleep two guests, the full-sized bed suddenly became a problem. The 10′ x 10.5′ room simply didn’t offer enough floor space for two desks and a safe play area.

At first we tried to make do by rotating the bed into the corner and sketching an upholstered headboard arrangement to create a daybed feel. We brought in a rug we’d bought on clearance to help anchor the corner, and yes, Burger approved of the new layout (ten points if you find him in the photos). Even so, the bed still dominated the room and left almost no play space.

Ultimately we decided to part with the full-sized bed and find a more compact sleeping solution for guests—one that could be minimized for most of the time when the room needed to serve as an office and playroom. We listed the bed and mattress on Craigslist and had a buyer lined up within hours. Once the bed was gone, we repurposed the green bench and bedside table into the nursery and enjoyed a blessedly empty room to plan the next steps.

With the space cleared, we weighed our options. A traditional Murphy bed was attractive in theory, but the room’s layout made it impractical: windows on two walls would be blocked when folded up, and the remaining walls were needed for the doorway and closet access. We also liked the idea of having a permanent seating solution for nursing, reading, and relaxing that didn’t disappear when the bed was stowed away. That steered us toward a sleeper sofa.

We were cautious about sleeper sofas because many people have experienced uncomfortable roll-out mattresses and exposed metal bars. However, we’d slept on some high-quality sleepers that were just as comfortable as a regular bed, so we figured a careful in-person test was the way to go. Online shopping offered options at various price points, but none of the online-only choices allowed us to try the mattress, and some looked too futon-like or had exposed wood that would require additional work.

Instead, we visited a local furniture showroom where we could fold out models and try them. That hands-on approach paid off. We found a floor-model full-sized sleeper by a reputable manufacturer at a fraction of the price—a plush, comfortable option that didn’t reveal a metal bar unless someone exceeded the advertised weight limit. The subtle blue-green upholstery worked well with our house color palette while remaining practical for everyday use.

We positioned the sleeper under the higher window to visually open the room and reveal more of the Pottery Barn rug we already owned. The result: dramatically more floor space for desks and a generous play area for our child. The new layout lets the room function as a productive two-person office during the day, a tidy play zone, and a comfortable guest room at night.

This was just the first step in the multifunctional office transformation. Next up: maximizing the floor plan with two workstations, smart paperwork and file storage, art and accessories, toy organization, and a DIY light fixture refresh. If you’ve had success with a sleeper sofa or built your own pull-down bed, we’d love to hear about your experience and any tips you picked up along the way.
