Eighteen football fields of showroom space—yet not a single pigskin in sight. That’s the only way to describe the sprawling display area at Green Front Furniture, a massive discount furniture and accessories destination in Farmville, VA. Located about an hour from Richmond, it made for an easy mini road trip to see what treasures we could find.
Green Front occupies a dozen buildings—many repurposed tobacco warehouses—clustered in Farmville’s small downtown. The result is a shopping experience that blends big-box variety with historic charm: you move from one expansive, high-ceilinged room to another, encountering a wide range of furniture styles, rugs, lighting and accessories along the way. We explored most of the roughly 650,000 square feet of showroom space and enjoyed the variety and atmosphere even though we weren’t hunting for anything specific.
Most of the inventory leans traditional—dark woods, leather upholstery and classic silhouettes—so it wasn’t all a match for our lighter, more modern tastes. Still, there were plenty of pieces that stopped us in our tracks. Rugs were a highlight: lush, textured runners and bold, colorful area rugs that can instantly change a room’s mood. One coral-hued rug in particular had Sherry smitten; its saturated color and soft pile would brighten any space.
Seating options ranged from practical to playful. I found an eco-friendly sofa collection surprisingly affordable—the model I tried was priced at $899 and was comfortable enough to earn a lengthy test-sit. That included the blissful opportunity to rest tired feet between buildings.
We both admired chairs and ottomans that could easily complement a living room refresh. Sherry fell for an armless grey-blue chair with a clean, contemporary profile while I was drawn to an oversized leather ottoman that looked both sturdy and inviting. An armchair covered in an American-Indian-meets-ikat inspired pattern offered the kind of bold texture and pattern that can add personality without overpowering a space.
Function-forward pieces were plentiful too. A sleeper ottoman caught our attention for its clever dual-purpose design: a comfortable footrest that converts into an extra twin bed for guests.
