We’re excited to share a budget-friendly family room makeover inspired by a mood board we created for Kelly a while back. The transformation was completed by Stephenie, who followed many of the original mood board suggestions and made a handful of smart, affordable purchases and DIY updates. Below she explains exactly what she did and how she achieved a fresh, brighter room for less than $250.
How the makeover came together
Stephenie began by following the color recommendation from the mood board: she painted the walls Snowbell by Glidden. That soft, neutral white created a clean backdrop and immediately made the space feel lighter and more cohesive. Keeping paint neutral is one of the most cost-effective ways to change the mood of a room and allows smaller decor pieces to stand out.
Next, she replaced heavy curtains with the Blad curtains from Ikea recommended on the mood board. The new curtains added texture and allowed more natural light to filter through, contributing to the overall brightened look. Drapery choices can dramatically influence perceived room size and atmosphere without a major expense.
Smart finds and small updates that made a big difference
Stephenie scoured secondhand options and local classifieds to stretch her budget. She found an end table at Goodwill for just $5.99, then updated its hardware with new knobs from Target for $2.99—an inexpensive swap that modernized the piece instantly. Thrifted furniture paired with a few new accents is a reliable strategy for creating a custom look without overspending.
She also purchased an Ikea Poang chair with a footstool from Craigslist for $79. The chair was in excellent condition and added a comfortable, timeless seating option. Buying gently used basics lets you invest in quality pieces at a fraction of retail price.
To round out the room, Stephenie rearranged the sofa to improve flow, added lamps to increase layered lighting, and hung a $16 mirror from TJ Maxx to reflect light and add depth. Mirrors and layered lighting are inexpensive design tools that visually expand space and enhance ambiance.
Before and after
Below is a playful before snapshot that captures the room’s previous look (and a familial moment—Stephenie’s daughter is cheekily imitating Miley Cyrus):

Budget breakdown and takeaways
Stephenie kept careful track of costs and reports that the entire update came in under $250. Key takeaways from her makeover include:
- Start with paint: a neutral, clean color like Snowbell by Glidden brightens and unifies a room.
- Shop secondhand: thrift stores and local classifieds yield great deals on furniture and larger items.
- Swap small details: replacing old hardware or adding new curtains, lamps, and mirrors has a major visual impact for minimal cost.
- Rearrange first: occasionally a fresh furniture layout is all a room needs to improve flow and function.
