Organize Kitchen Cabinets Together: Practical Tips

Tackled Together: Kitchen Cabinet Organization

We’re back with another two-part feature inviting you to work on a home project alongside us. Previously we cleaned out our garage and then tackled chaotic closets in two installments. This time the focus is squarely on the kitchen: specifically, those often-neglected cabinets that store most of our dry goods, cookware, and serving pieces.

Why These Cabinets Need Attention

There isn’t much mystery about why our two large double cabinets need serious help. Between them they hold every edible item in the kitchen that doesn’t live in the refrigerator. Over time things tend to migrate and get shuffled around, so cookie cutters end up with couscous, lasagna noodles sit far from the spaghetti, and mismatched containers accumulate in a corner. That jumble makes cooking slower and grocery shopping harder, because you can’t reliably find what you need.

Our Plan for a Weekend Makeover

This weekend we’ll pare things down, group like items together, and add simple systems to keep the cabinets organized going forward. The goal isn’t perfection or an expensive redesign. It’s practical, maintainable organization that makes everyday life easier. Here are the steps we’ll follow:

  • Empty both cabinets completely so we can assess everything in one place.
  • Sort items into categories: baking, grains and pasta, canned goods, snacks, spices and seasonings, baking tools and gadgets, glassware and serving pieces, and cookware if needed.
  • Discard expired food items, donate or repurpose duplicate gadgets, and recycle damaged packaging.
  • Measure cabinet dimensions to determine the best way to group items and what storage solutions will fit.
  • Place frequently used items at eye level or in the most accessible cabinet, and store seasonal or seldom-used items higher up or toward the back.
  • Use clear containers or labeled bins for loose items like grains, rice, and snacks so contents are visible and last-used-by dates are easy to monitor.
  • Create a dedicated zone for baking tools and another for dinner prep so tasks flow more efficiently.

Tips for Long-Term Cabinet Organization

We’re aiming for a system that’s easy to maintain day to day. A few habits and simple tools can make a big difference:

  • Label shelves or containers—clear labels reduce the mental load of deciding where something belongs.
  • Group items by function rather than by random placement. Keeping all baking supplies together and all pasta products together saves time and reduces duplicates.
  • Rotate stock as you buy new items: move recently purchased goods to the back so older items get used first.
  • Invest in a few inexpensive containers and risers to make the best use of vertical space and keep small items from toppling over.
  • Schedule a quarterly quick sweep of your cabinets to toss expired food and tidy loose items.
