Remember our playful visit with Katie and Jeremy from All Bower Power back in May? Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what happens when two female home bloggers team up: within minutes they’re directing the boys, rearranging furniture, and creating a mini bedroom makeover that cost exactly zero dollars.
To step back for a moment: the refresh took place in Katie and Jeremy’s bedroom — the very room that connected us in the first place. We originally “met” Katie online when she shared her own bedroom makeover inspired by ours, and from that virtual spark a real friendship grew. Before long we were spending a weekend nearby, crashing in the guest room just down the hall from that very bedroom. When we arrived, the room already looked lovely, but we both spotted small improvements we wanted to try.
It began fast. Katie started moving things around while chatting about the ideas she’d been meaning to try. We put the boys to work lifting a heavy dresser from one corner and placing it on the opposite side where a slipper chair had been. To add height and reflect more light, we topped the dresser with a mirror and a vase. Simple swaps, big impact: the doorway now opens into a clearer flow and there’s more room to move around the bed.
So where did the slipper chair go? Into the corner the dresser used to occupy. That switch didn’t require any help, so the boys were dismissed to resume their TV watching — some strange show about oversized pancakes and enormous burgers, apparently. We also pulled an old floor lamp Katie had on hand to sit beside the chair, though it was missing a shade.
Next up: that blank wall. We had already borrowed a mirror from the hallway for the dresser, so we were short on available wall decor. Then I found an old parasol in a basket in Katie’s office. She explained that several parasols remained from her wedding day. We both shared the same creative spark and decided to repurpose one into three-dimensional wall art.
We headed to Katie’s basement and spent some time playing with tools — girl power all the way. We shortened the parasol stem so it extended only a few inches from the wall, then flipped the parasol so the decorative inner pattern faced outward. Peeling back a bit of the paper at the top revealed a small hole that allowed the parasol to hang securely on a single nail. The result was a textured, sculptural piece that added pattern and depth to the wall.
Since the lamp had no shade, we improvised. Earlier we’d noticed a blue wire basket candle holder on an ottoman in the room. We placed that basket over the lamp’s bulb to serve as a graphic, linear “shade” that complemented the parasol’s pattern. It introduced a bit of contrast and a playful, airy silhouette without spending a cent.
For a finishing touch, we switched out pillows on the tan chair to add contrast. The chair itself is the same Dolce Lounge Chair from a popular store that we use in our own living spaces, so it felt familiar and cozy. In minutes the corner transformed into a sweet reading nook — or, if you’re me, an elegant place to pile clothes — that felt fresh and intentional.
It’s worth noting that none of our solutions were conventional: a parasol used as wall art, a wire candle basket serving as a lampshade. That’s the point — we embraced what we already had and let our creativity lead. The tiny, zero-cost makeover came together from a few well-placed swaps, some repurposed items, and a willingness to experiment.
More than the physical changes, the day was about friendship and collaboration. That’s the magic: building internet friendships that turn into real-life sleepovers, laughter, and silly projects. If you enjoy small-budget transformations and quirky, resourceful styling, this quick room refresh is proof that a little creativity and teamwork can go a long way.
If you want a lighter, more playful side of our time together, we even made a short table-setting video that captures the sillier moments and inside jokes from that weekend. It’s a reminder that decorating can be productive and downright fun when friends are involved.
