Beach House Summer Prep: Essential Checklist and Tips

Now that spring has arrived, summer feels just around the corner. This will be our first real summer using the beach house—last year we were still tiling bathrooms through Labor Day—so our plan is to spend as much time there as possible: both to chip away at our to-do list and to actually enjoy the beach.

As we’ve been preparing the house for a proper summer, we realized we’d overlooked another important detail: getting ourselves ready for the season.

All the fast food from long drives and the workouts we’ve skipped because we were out of town or exhausted from projects have taken their toll. With Memorial Day approaching, we’re recommitting to getting in better shape for summer, and we’d love for you to join us. We’re calling the effort “Beach House Body.”

We’re not fitness professionals or models, and that’s part of the appeal. Instead of perfect form demonstrations, we’ll share approachable, real-world workouts for regular people—people who sometimes mishandle a barbell and prefer practical, enjoyable routines. Each Saturday leading up to summer we’ll release a short video featuring beginner-friendly workouts and simple ideas you can follow at home or at the beach.

Couple doing a light workout

To get everyone excited for the kick-off, we put together a short preview video packed with energy. If you can’t watch it just yet, here’s a summary of the types of movements and routines we’ll cover.

We’ll begin with familiar gym staples: strength training and core exercises designed with beginners in mind. These sessions focus on building a solid foundation and improving everyday strength so you feel more capable carrying groceries, repainting a room, or moving beach chairs.

Next we’ll include lower-intensity options like gentle yoga and mobility flows to help with recovery and flexibility. Then we’ll move into higher-energy aerobic sessions to boost cardio fitness. One fan-favorite move combines rotational strength with cardio—perfect for those paint-rolling or sweeping motions that sneak into home projects.

Paint-rolling exercise

To keep things fresh, we added DIY-friendly exercises that use tools and materials you already have around the house. Instead of a kettlebell, try a weighted paint can or a full gallon—simple swaps that make workouts practical and fun. The heavier the load, the better the challenge, and everyday items often create functional strength gains faster than you’d expect.

Using household items as weights

Many of our makeshift weights came from the garage: tool bags, boxes of tile supplies, and paint cans became part of the circuit. Walking lunges while carrying a tool bag instantly make the exercise more useful for real life. Sherry discovered lunges feel different—and more entertaining—when you hoist a box of tiling supplies.

The series is meant to form a complete, well-rounded routine, so we encourage you to follow each episode through to the end. Watch at your own pace, repeat sessions you enjoy, and return to the videos whenever you have a spare moment. By the later episodes the workouts get increasingly creative—and yes, a bit goofy—because we like to have fun while we build consistency.

One more thing:

APRIL FOOLS!

April Fools announcement

If you guessed this was too ambitious for Sherry, you were right—podcast listeners know she prefers “accidental exercise.” While we both could benefit from more movement and less fast food, this particular fitness “journey” was an April Fools’ joke. We hope it made you smile, and maybe even inspired a few improvised workouts around the house.

If you enjoy our annual pranks, here’s a quick recap of past April Fools ideas from over the years (titles only):

  • 2017 – The launch of our novelty sock line
  • 2016 – An app for swapping out decor items
  • 2015 – Siri for home decorating
  • 2014 – A household crafting challenge
  • 2013 – “Hush” — our debut music video
  • 2012 – A totally reasonable toilet purchase
  • 2011 – Burger’s very own playroom
  • 2010 – A super classy curb appeal upgrade
  • 2009 – The purrfect light fixtures

Wishing you a fun April Fools’ Day and a wonderful Easter. Whether you’re tackling projects, enjoying the beach, or sneaking in a few household-strength workouts, have a great spring!
