Our house.
Right now a crew of ten is here shooting a glossy magazine feature about our home. This visit is more elaborate than usual: alongside the photographer and videographer, there’s a hair and make-up artist and a wardrobe stylist. We’ve never felt so important—or so self-conscious. We’re hoping we don’t look like awkward dorks on camera. The rest of the team includes the photographer’s two assistants, an assistant to the wardrobe stylist, a creative director, a prop stylist and the prop stylist’s assistant. The house is busy with people carrying reflectors, tripods, pillows and floral arrangements, all working to shape every shot.
The dog, Burger, is in the thick of it, happily making friends with everyone who moves through the rooms. He follows the commotion, sniffs the props, and occasionally inspects a carefully placed pillow or rug. If you’ve ever wondered how a calm household handles a magazine shoot, picture organized pandemonium: people moving with purpose, quiet bursts of laughter, and lots of careful staging. It’s chaotic, but in a way that feels purposeful and creative.
The sunroom is a great example of how a house transforms for a feature shoot. It’s currently full of props and equipment—orchids, cushions, styled stacks of books, and soft lighting setups. The space has been rearranged and layered to capture a textured, lived-in look that reads well on camera. The result is beautiful, a curated kind of chaos that makes each frame feel inviting and thoughtfully composed. Below is a shot of our sunroom mid-shoot, full of styling elements and gear:
We’re genuinely enjoying the process. Watching a professional crew turn ordinary corners of our home into magazine-ready settings has been educational and surprisingly fun. There’s a rhythm to it: the stylist tweaks a throw, the photographer steps back to check a frame, the creative director adjusts a color balance, and the videographer captures behind-the-scenes moments. Even the small details—the angle of a stem, the fold of a napkin—get attention, and those tiny adjustments can make a big difference in the final images.
We can’t share the magazine name just yet, but we’ll drop clues and tease what we can. For now, here’s a little visual hint about where the feature will appear next April:
