A couple of weeks ago, Sherry and I spent an afternoon walking through some of Richmond’s most overlooked neighborhoods while house hunting. We weren’t searching for a renovation project for ourselves, but rather looking for homes improved by Richmond’s Better Housing Coalition. Their work stood out immediately.
The Better Housing Coalition has been developing high-quality, affordable housing in Richmond for more than twenty years. They first came to our attention when we decided to share some prize winnings with a local housing charity. We asked several friends involved with nonprofit work who they trusted, and every single person named the Better Housing Coalition. Donating to them felt like an obvious and rewarding choice.
Recently, the organization invited us to tour some of their projects so we could see their impact firsthand. We happily accepted—who could pass up a chance to witness meaningful before-and-after transformations, especially when they benefit families and individuals in need?
T.K. and Jane from the Better Housing Coalition guided us through neighborhoods such as Church Hill, Union Hill, and Manchester. We drove down blocks dotted with homes that clearly needed attention next to houses that the Coalition had already revitalized. Whether restoring historic structures, building new single-family homes, or planning whole communities, the Coalition delivers attractive, functional housing that working people—teachers, firefighters, nurses, and others—can actually afford on modest incomes.
One thing that stood out was how thoughtful their work is; these are not cookie-cutter houses. Projects are designed to honor the character of each neighborhood, preserving architectural details that reflect local history. More recently, sustainability has become a key focus. Many new homes are built to EarthCraft standards or similar efficiency certifications, meaning they use far less energy and cost far less to operate. Those savings translate into real monthly relief for homeowners.
On the tour we learned a lot of impressive facts, admired a range of beautifully finished homes, and were reminded that there is still much work to do. The experience reinforced how fortunate it is to have a place to call home and how transformative an affordable, well-built house can be. We left feeling grateful for organizations like the Better Housing Coalition that are committed to revitalizing neighborhoods and expanding access to stable housing.
