Midmonth Update: My Make-the-Bed-Everyday Resolution
Now that the month is halfway over, I wanted to share an update on my make-the-bed-everyday resolution. So far, I haven’t missed a single day. I’ve stuck with it every morning, even when it’s tempting to skip. The practice has been simple but meaningful: a short, consistent habit that sets a tidy tone for the rest of the day.
That said, there’s one persistent challenge that tends to undo my work in short order — my dog, Burger. He adores the freshly made bed and seems to consider it his personal invitation to jump in and get cozy. Often, the bed looks picture-perfect for all of ten or twenty minutes before Burger finds his spot and turns it into his nap zone. Can you really blame him? If I were a dog, I’d probably curl up under warm covers too.
Even when the covers are rumpled again, I still make the bed each morning. The act itself matters more than perfection. Resetting the room daily makes the bedroom feel cared for and helps me maintain momentum with other small habits. On days when friends drop by or when I need to focus, an already-made bed makes the space feel more intentional and calm.
Why I’m Committing to This Simple Habit
Making the bed is a low-effort, high-return habit. It creates an immediate sense of accomplishment and neatness and can influence other behaviors throughout the day. By taking two minutes every morning to straighten sheets and fluff pillows, I’m reinforcing discipline and setting a productive tone. Even with Burgers’s enthusiastic interceptions, the routine itself is what I’m trying to cement.
What Helps Me Keep Going
- Keeping the process quick and simple. If it takes too long, I’m more likely to skip it.
- Not aiming for perfection. A made bed that stays perfect for hours is a bonus, not a requirement.
- Accepting moments of mess. When Burger hops on, I remind myself it’s part of life with a dog — not a failure.
- Pairing it with another small habit. I tend to make the bed right after opening the curtains, which makes both actions automatic.
Sticking with this resolution has already changed my mornings in subtle ways. I notice a little more order, a slightly calmer start, and a greater appreciation for small wins. Even when the bed quickly becomes Burger’s favorite spot, I take a moment to enjoy the sight of him settled and content — which, in its own way, feels like a reward.
Progress on My Other Resolution: Aquatober
Alongside making the bed every day, I’m also following a second resolution this month: drinking only water, a challenge I’ve playfully dubbed Aquatober. That’s been going well, too. Cutting out soda and other sugary drinks has made me more mindful about what I consume and how it affects my energy and mood. I miss soda occasionally, but so far I’ve stuck to water and feel proud of the consistency.
Between the two resolutions — a tidy bed each morning and a commitment to drinking water — this month has become a small experiment in building better daily rituals. Neither is dramatic on its own, but together they’re nudging me toward a more intentional daily routine. If all continues to go well, I might keep both habits beyond this month.
PS: If you have a pet that loves your bed as much as Burger does, you’re not alone. A little acceptance and a sense of humor go a long way when pets hijack our best-laid plans.
