In this project, persistence paid off: by the fifth coat our front door finally looked spectacular. We chose Valspar’s Fabulous Red, and the name really lives up to the color—it’s bold, vivid, and unmistakably red. If I were to do it again, I would prime over the existing black first to reduce the number of finish coats needed, but a thorough five-coat approach delivered a smooth, even result in the end.
Applying five even coats took time, but the process was enjoyable thanks to the lovely view from the porch. While painting, I kept glancing up at the flowering cherry tree in the front yard—its blossoms made the long paint sessions feel more like relaxation than work.
Choosing the right red was an important decision. When we compared swatches against our brick, most reds were too similar in tone and intensity to the brick’s reddish-brown hue. Our goal was a front door that stood out, not one that blended into the facade. We selected the brightest, most dramatic lipstick red in the lineup—Fabulous Red—applied in a semi-gloss exterior formula for both shine and durability. The semi-gloss finish highlights architectural details and is easier to clean, which is helpful for a frequently used entryway.
At dusk, the red really comes alive—its warmth contrasts beautifully with the cooler tones of the brick and the surrounding greenery. The transformation adds instant curb appeal and a welcoming focal point to the exterior.
To complete the exterior palette, we chose colors that complement the all-brick facade without competing with it. The trim is a warm tan (Valspar’s Lyndhurst Stone), which brightens the edges and trimwork. We painted the shutters and the door stoop a deep black (Glidden’s Dark Secret) to anchor the house and provide contrast. Then we added the standout element—the Fabulous Red door—to inject personality and drama. Together, these choices create a cohesive, timeless look that feels crisp and refined.
The overall effect is classic and clean. The brighter red ensures the door reads as a distinct accent against the brick rather than blending into it—an important guideline if you’re considering a red door on a brick house: pick a red that’s clearly brighter and redder than the brick.
