No, the title of this week’s giveaway isn’t meant to be provocative — it’s simply the clearest way to identify the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway that’s been appearing on several of our favorite blogs. Now it’s here on YHL, and we’re excited to share the details. Ladies and gentlemen, we present: the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway. That’s right — DuPont is giving one reader a free iPod Touch. Monday just got a little brighter.
DuPont recently released a free iPhone and iPod Touch app called mySurface, created to help you choose a countertop from their Corian and Zodiaq product lines. The app’s playful and visual interface would have been handy when we were redoing our kitchen, if nothing else to give us a quick sense of how many styles and finishes are available. Although the timing was a little late for our kitchen renovation, mySurface still sparked plenty of bathroom design ideas through its photo gallery and material previews.
DuPont were kind enough to send us an iPod Touch so we could explore the app and hunt down other useful home-improvement and design apps to recommend. Beyond mySurface, we’ve been trying out a handful of apps that make planning and shopping for home projects easier and more fun:
Benjamin Moore’s ColorCapture app is one we’ve had a lot of fun with. It’s free and lets you upload photos or snap pictures with your device’s camera to identify matching paint colors and build color schemes. Whether you’re matching a pillow, a fabric swatch or a favorite photo, it’s a fast way to find coordinating paints and get color inspiration for a room.
For IKEA fans, the SwedeShop app — a low-cost organizer for shopping trips — functions like a portable shopping list and catalog. It helps you remember items, keep track of prices and even tally your budget as you add things, so you can leave the pencil at home and shop with more confidence.
We’ve also been using Evernote again for keeping notes, lists and quick snapshots tied to our projects. It’s more organized than a basic notes or voice-memo tool: you can store text, photos, audio and screen grabs, tag items for easy searching, and sort or find content by location. For browsing local listings, craigsphone has made searching classifieds and local furniture finds simpler on a handheld device — the content is the same, but the experience feels quicker and more convenient when you’re on the go. The app itself is free, although it may tempt you into more purchases as you discover bargains.
We’ve shared tips before about keeping notes and lists on mobile devices, and these apps have become part of our everyday toolkit for home projects, shopping and inspiration. They streamline the planning process and help us capture ideas the moment they strike.
