This house crash in Northern Virginia left us swooning over the materials and finishes—especially the kitchen and bathrooms. It’s the kind of home that feels immediately warm and lived-in, with thoughtful details and high-impact choices that make everyday life a little more beautiful. Come meet Melissa, the homeowner, and step inside.
Although the original house dates to 1940, Melissa and her husband Jim added a major rear addition in 2009 that included a completely new kitchen, a family room, and an upstairs master suite. The update blends classic proportions with modern finishes in a way that feels both authentic to the house and wonderfully current.
The kitchen sits just off the entry hallway and it instantly commands attention. It’s a tasteful mix of traditional and vintage-inspired touches: thick crown molding, vintage-style pendant lights over the island, crisp white subway tile, and glass-front cabinets that showcase neat dishware and curated accents. The contrast between the white cabinetry and the black honed granite counters is striking, and the stainless appliances keep the palette grounded and practical.
One standout feature is the custom range hood Jim built himself—a beautiful focal point that shows how personal craftsmanship elevates a space. A pot filler mounted above the range adds both convenience and that aspirational, well-designed look. Small splurges and smart finds combine to make the kitchen feel special without sacrificing family functionality.
The kitchen opens directly into a generous family room, creating a flexible, multi-use area where everyday life happens. A flat-screen TV sits above a cozy gas fireplace, and striped tone-on-tone draperies add a layered softness to the room. Built-ins flank the fireplace and are filled with books and family items, while toys tucked into a corner remind you this is a real family home—lived in, loved, and practical.
From the family room, wide steps lead out to a back patio and a grassy play area perfect for the couple’s son and daughter. The outdoor space ties back to the interior in scale and material warmth, making the extension feel seamless and intentional rather than an afterthought.
At the front of the house there’s a more formal living room with a fireplace whose clean mantel lines add architectural interest. Personal touches appear throughout the home: a framed arrangement on the staircase, small thrifted finds, and DIY projects that reflect the family’s personality and hands-on approach to decorating.
The children’s rooms are lovely examples of function meeting style. The son’s room features built-in floor-to-ceiling shelving that Jim constructed, maximizing storage and display in a way that’s both useful and visually appealing. A handmade rocking horse—crafted by Jim’s father—adds a sweet, sentimental detail. Downstairs, the basement includes a spacious playroom and guest area. When we visited it was still a work in progress, but the finished basement is now a fantastic extension of the home’s usable space. The guest room features a handmade headboard and cheerful bedding, while the adjacent guest bathroom keeps the bright, welcoming palette consistent throughout.
