As many of you know, I recently picked up a set of affordable drinking glasses that we immediately fell for, which kicked off a full refresh of the glass-fronted corner cabinet here at Casa Petersik. Those simple new glasses were the nudge I needed to rethink how we display everyday items so they’re both useful and beautiful.
Before the update, the cabinet was filled with everyday plates, bowls and glassware—items we use regularly and don’t want to treat as “too special.” When I brought home the new glasses, I promised John they wouldn’t be hidden away. The most effective way to keep items in daily rotation is to put them on display behind glass, so we can actually see and reach them. The result is a brighter, more inviting cabinet that encourages use rather than careful storage.
The back of the cabinet is painted the same soft blue as the kitchen walls, which makes the colored glassware pop and reads fresher for spring. The new glasses created a gentle palette shift: they still work with our white dishes but also give us the freedom to showcase a few more colorful pieces. That little injection of color makes the whole kitchen feel lighter and more cheerful without feeling cluttered.
On the top shelf we display tall Ikea glasses we’ve had for a while. They used to live in the cabinet to the left, but bringing them here allowed their soft celery green and pale yellow patterns to play off the newer green and blue World Market glasses. Those taller tumblers are our go-to for orange juice and smoothies, and surprisingly they’ve held up well over months of daily use.
We also reshuffled a few multipurpose items. Our initial mugs—those sentimental pieces that used to sit among stemless wine glasses—were moved to another room where they serve additional roles like pen holders or organizers for cotton swabs. In their spot we placed inexpensive blue Ikea vases we’d tucked away long ago. The vases reinforce the airy color story and add some visual height to the display.
On the bottom shelf we mixed in objects we already owned: a green glass votive holder, a couple of mini Pellegrino bottles with their labels removed, and a small blue Ikea bowl. These little touches tie the lower shelf into the same light spring palette while keeping the arrangement relaxed and practical. The plain white bowls that once flanked the plates now live in the adjacent cabinet along with clear stemware, which the new layout helped accommodate. By moving a few pieces around, we freed up room without sacrificing storage—everything has a clear place.
The entire refresh cost very little: just six new drinking glasses from World Market were enough to inspire the change. It’s a reminder that small purchases can spark broader updates when you work with what you already own. I don’t always have time to rearrange and edit displays, but when I do, the payoff is always worth it. A quick swap here and there can lift the mood of a room and make everyday living feel a little more special.
