It’s obvious from all the embedded music videos and song-titled posts that John and I love music. John even mentioned that he sings a lot in a previous post, and many of you know I spent my younger years slightly obsessed with a certain rapper — an obsession that once led me to say the word “phat” on national TV. So when a musician friend in Richmond casually invited us into their studio to mess around, the idea of making something musical felt inevitable. One playful session led to another, and before we knew it we had poured our DIY energy into a homemade song for you.
Our track is a light-hearted mix of life lessons, home-improvement anecdotes, design rules we follow (and sometimes break), and various domestic musings — all set to a decidedly upbeat, homemade beat. It’s not meant to be a polished chart-topper; it’s a fun, slightly goofy expression of the things we love about making a house into a home, delivered with a wink and a smile.
We’re not Big & Pac, but we did get an edited version of our recording back, and we’re excited to share our first single with you. We decided to call it: Hush.
So without further ado, here’s our not-quite-professional video — the one that’s missing only the entourage and the helicopter:
If you’re at work and can’t watch right now, it’s worth saving for later. Here’s a quick preview of what to expect:
- My hair is down for most of it — a rare sight these days.
- There are a few playful special effects that we’re proud of (including three brief appearances by our dog).
- Burger and Clara — our pets — make cameo appearances.
- Ceramic animals pop up in several scenes.
- We do some shelf styling, because of course we do.
- We take the time to remind people about wearing safety glasses when tackling projects.
Full disclosure: we didn’t actually record in a professional studio. Instead, we created a short, faux track at home — rapping a few lines into a computer microphone, applying stock vocal effects in Final Cut Pro, and layering it over a free beat we found online. Then we shot a deliberately cliché-filled video at home and stitched it together. The result is a charmingly imperfect first single that’s more about fun and creativity than perfection.
Despite the low-fi approach, it still feels special to share something so personal and playful. How many rappers can honestly say they dropped the words “miter saw” into a verse? For us, this project was more fun than two thirty-somethings probably should have in one afternoon. And it’s part of a longer tradition: this is our fifth April Fool’s contribution, and it’s one of our favorites from the bunch.
If you want to revisit some past favorites later, our collection of playful annual posts spans several years and includes a few quirky highlights. But for now, we hope this little song gives you a chuckle and a reminder that creativity can happen anywhere — even in a living room with a laptop, a few props, and a whole lot of enthusiasm.
We hope a few of you were pleasantly fooled — though we suspect most of you weren’t. Either way, thanks for watching and for letting us share another silly, joyful project from our home to yours.
