Light and Airy Living Room Designs That Stay Livable

Just when you thought the duplex was getting all the attention, we slipped in some beach house updates. The backyard is slowly coming together — shed, patio, fence — and I can’t wait to show it once it’s further along. Today, though, we’re focusing on the living room, which is now lighter, brighter, and much more beachy.

The space finally reads like it’s a few blocks from the ocean. Because this house is packed with family, friends, and kids, everything needed to be sand- and popsicle-friendly. Our aim was a light, airy look that’s also durable and easy to clean — pretty, but not precious.

We used pieces we designed, including a new sofa in performance fabric — a must-have for a kid-filled summer house. The new sofa replaced our old Ikea sectional, which had served us well but was ready for retirement after being moved from house to house for years. The sectional’s chaise often cut into walkways or forced awkward layouts, so donating it felt like a fresh start.

Swapping the bulky sectional for a smaller sofa immediately opened the room. The smaller footprint allowed for more practical furnishings: a side table at my spot for tea and a reading lamp where it actually gets used. Breaking the seating up — sofa plus separate chairs — also created better flow and conversation areas than one giant sectional ever did.

We replaced the vintage rug with a patterned gray rug that balances lightness and practicality. The new rug’s varied gray tones are forgiving and hide everyday wear, which is essential in a busy family space. Between the rug and the lighter sofa, the room finally feels open and coastal without sacrificing durability.

White-painted wood furniture is another simple way we brightened the room while keeping it functional. A quick coat of white paint on an old coffee table or bookcase can transform the feel of a space in an afternoon. Light walls and washable white curtains add to the airy feel while remaining practical for a beach house lifestyle.

The side table we chose has three tiers, which is great for stashing magazines, toys, or a basket of Legos within easy reach. We liked it enough that we ordered more for our other house. Small, multi-surface pieces like this help the room feel layered and useful without cluttering the sightlines.

I added small, affordable art prints from an independent artist and framed them in simple frames for texture and color. Tiny touches like these bring personality to the room without overwhelming the calming palette.

We also swapped our darker-legged coffee table for a white scalloped version with a shallow rounded edge. Initially John worried the scallops would make it uncomfortable to rest your feet on, but they turned out to be perfectly fine — and the lip actually helps keep board game pieces and other small items from rolling off. The table includes a small remote drawer, which is a surprisingly useful feature for keeping clutter hidden.

Layout-wise, this room evolved over many months. We’re still considering mounting the TV, testing paint colors, and replacing a couple of window chairs with larger, more relaxed seating. The lesson we keep circling back to is that smaller, well-placed pieces often create more usable seating and better circulation than one oversized item.

We did have a slime incident under the chaise that left a grease mark on the rug once the sectional was removed, but after trying several remedies the stain lifted using white vinegar, gentle scraping, and a dab of nail polish remover. The rug’s mixed grays helped camouflage any remaining evidence, which was a relief. Also worth celebrating: a chocolate mishap on the new sofa came right out with just water, proof that performance fabric is indispensable in a home with kids.

Finally, we updated the dining room with new chandeliers from our lighting collection. They feel more substantial than the old capiz fixtures and the polished metal details tie into the living room’s other lights. The old chandeliers found a happy new home in the master bedrooms of our other property — proving once again that moving pieces around can refresh multiple spaces.

These updates show that rooms don’t have to be finished overnight. Moving furniture, swapping a rug, or painting a few pieces can dramatically change how a room feels. If you’re stuck, try mixing smaller seating pieces or brightening key surfaces with white paint — little changes can lead to big improvements.
