Meet Cindy and her husband Robert, and their charming mid-century rancher refreshed with thoughtful design and green upgrades.
We often don’t know what to expect when we arrive for a House Crashing, and this visit was no exception. A friend tipped us off to Cindy’s house after the giveaway, and as we walked up the path we were instantly taken with the lively entry. A punchy turquoise front door opens into a bright, pink living room—Robert painted it himself, which we loved. The room feels joyful and personal the moment you step inside.
Local artwork, clean-lined furniture, and bold colors create a modern but welcoming vibe throughout the living area. Cindy has mixed no-VOC paint, secondhand and recovered pieces, and contemporary finds to achieve a luxe look without excess. For example, a recovered blue chair pairs effortlessly with newer accents, proving a curated mix of old and new can feel cohesive and stylish.
Twinkling white lights add a magical touch in the pink room and draw you further into the home. A simple table lamp from a popular retailer sits comfortably among antiques and handmade pieces. Cindy even lined the back of a built-in nook with glittering wallpaper to amplify the ambient light—small, playful details that elevate the space.
Adjoining the living area is a dining room with a moody, intimate atmosphere. Moroccan-inspired lanterns and modern ghost chairs create an interesting contrast, while custom built-ins crafted from sustainable wood offer practical storage. The built-ins were designed with low-emission materials and even incorporate a hidden wine chiller, blending functionality with eco-friendly choices.
Cindy and Robert also expanded the home with a modest, well-considered addition rather than building large and wasteful square footage. The addition houses a practical kitchen featuring cork flooring, recycled glass countertops and backsplash, and Energy Star appliances. Finding contractors knowledgeable about sustainable materials was a challenge, so the couple invested significant time researching and managing much of the work themselves. Their diligence paid off: the kitchen is beautiful, functional, and environmentally responsible.
The pantry is a dream—floor-to-ceiling doors resemble a giant armoire, providing abundant, organized storage that complements a generous island. The dining area continues to delight with a ceramic antler chandelier and a rustic-modern wood table that balances the room. As a fun aside, Cindy mentioned how cork floors react when a dropped knife pierces the surface: the cork self-heals when the object is removed, leaving little to no trace. It’s a quirky but practical advantage of cork flooring.
Color plays a major role across the home, with brilliant hues used in a surprisingly soothing way. The pink living room relaxes you on first sight, while a punchy green bathroom brings energy and cheer. The color palette feels layered and intentional—each room is composed with an eye toward the views and transitions to adjacent spaces.
