Karin is a pet photographer in Minneapolis who, when she isn’t capturing charming portraits of dogs, has created an impressive and thoughtfully designed kitchen. Readers often request non-white kitchen tours, and this one stands out because it is entirely wood. Below is Karin’s letter, which I’ve edited for clarity and paired with some of her striking before-and-after photos and one dramatic demolition shot.
Hi Sherry and John! You’ve been a real inspiration to my husband and me. After years of renting, we finally bought our first house last summer and immediately started remodeling. We wanted an open, modern home with abundant natural light. Thanks to years of watching renovation shows and learning from resources like yours, we knew what to prioritize and which changes we could handle ourselves. We found a semi-neglected property that checked all of our “must-have” boxes and was more affordable than the other houses we looked at, which allowed us to take on bigger projects.
Although the before photos don’t show the full extent, the kitchen and dining area were grimy and worn out. There were stains on the walls, the carpet had a small flea problem, and many of the kitchen tiles were cracked or damaged. It was clear the space needed a full refresh.
Jeff and I salvaged and donated what we could, then brought out the sledgehammer for the rest. We did as much of the work ourselves—with generous help from family—while hiring professionals for the major structural and technical tasks, such as installing heavy beams and running a gas line to the stove. The project was a steep learning curve, but we gained a ton of experience. To keep costs down we hunted for discounts and did creative DIYs where possible—the dining chairs were an affordable find and we built the dining table using legs from a common furniture retailer.
I referenced many of your how-to guides during the renovation—hello, backsplash—and your fearless approach encouraged me to tackle projects that at first seemed intimidating. Thank you for the inspiration and practical tips. Best wishes, Karin
The final result is a bright, airy kitchen that proves wood cabinets can create a warm yet luminous atmosphere. Karin’s space balances natural materials with modern touches, resulting in a kitchen that feels both inviting and contemporary. She has shared many additional photos and a sourcing list on her photography blog for readers who want more detail on finishes and furnishings.
What stands out most? For many, the dogs are an instant favorite—and rightly so, as they bring charm and personality to the images. Beyond that, there are several design elements worth noting: the dining chairs and stools that add texture, the pendant lights above the island that lend a refined glow, and the clean, streamlined cabinet hardware. One particularly striking feature is the waterfall edge on the island countertop, which creates a polished, contemporary focal point and elevates the overall design.
Karin’s renovation story highlights how thoughtful planning, a mix of DIY and professional work, and a willingness to learn can transform a neglected space into a beautiful, functional kitchen. Her project is a great example for anyone considering a similar renovation: prioritize structural and safety upgrades, salvage and donate what you can, shop smart for materials and furnishings, and don’t be afraid to try projects you’ve never done before. The result can be both a uniquely personal space and a significant increase in comfort and enjoyment in your home.
We love how this kitchen turned out—the combination of natural wood, plenty of light, and carefully chosen details makes it feel warm and modern at once. Congratulations to Karin and Jeff on their first home and a fantastic kitchen transformation.
