Nursery Paint Makeover: Modern Random Vertical Stripes

We recently revealed that we’ll be designing a Young House Love nursery — not for us, but for John’s sister Emily, who is expecting a baby boy in October. We’re thrilled to create a fun, functional, and budget-friendly nursery for her. Over the coming weeks we’ll share affordable DIY ideas and step-by-step photos. The first task in Emily’s guest room, which started as a blank canvas, was to add color to the bare walls.

Instead of a single coat of soft blue-gray, we decided to go bold with a cheerful, modern treatment: randomly sized vertical stripes. The effect is playful, contemporary, and surprisingly simple to achieve.

Why Vertical Stripes?

Vertical stripes bring energy and height to a room. By varying the widths and spacing of each stripe and using a coordinated palette of accent colors, we created a vibrant look that feels fresh without overwhelming the space. The randomness keeps the design from feeling formal or fussy — perfect for a nursery that should be joyful and relaxed.

The One-Night Painting Process

The whole stripe project was completed in a single evening. The main steps were straightforward: choose the color palette, apply painter’s tape for each stripe, paint the stripes, and peel the tape to reveal crisp lines. Because the stripes were intentionally random in width and spacing, we didn’t measure everything to a fraction; instead, we stepped back frequently to make sure the composition felt balanced across the whole wall.

Our process in short:

• Pick four accent colors that complement the room’s base color.
• Use painter’s tape to mark vertical stripes of varying widths and spacing.
• Paint each taped stripe with one of the chosen accent colors.
• Carefully remove the tape while the paint is still slightly tacky for the cleanest edge.

Color Choices and Materials

We selected a soft blue-gray as the room’s primary color and added four cheerful accent colors for the stripes. To keep the project budget-friendly we bought one gallon of wall paint and three sample-sized cans for the accent stripes. We already had a can of white paint on hand for touch-ups and trim, so this initial phase cost just $39 in paint. That modest investment dramatically transformed the room and left leftover paint for other DIY projects, so we’ll reuse those colors for coordinating decor elements and small furniture updates.

Tips for a Successful Stripe Wall

Here are a few practical tips we used to ensure the stripes looked intentional and professional:

• Use high-quality painter’s tape and press the edges down firmly to prevent bleed-through.
• Apply paint in light layers, letting the first coat dry before adding a second if needed.
• Remove tape while paint is still slightly tacky to avoid peeling dried paint from the wall.
• Alternate colors and stripe widths as you go to maintain a balanced distribution across the wall.
• Step back often to evaluate the overall rhythm and spacing of the stripes.

Finishing Touches and Next Steps
