It’s late Sunday night as I sit down to write this. We just returned from a whirlwind weekend in Northern Virginia, where we helped John’s sister update a bedroom and picked up a few nursery items. Today I’ll walk through ten pieces we helped Carrie shop for, hang, and install to give her room a grown-up upgrade.
Carrie asked us to help her create a calmer, more adult bedroom after saving for a few nicer pieces since we painted her apartment back in 2011. She wanted an upholstered headboard, sturdier side tables, two table lamps, new art or a mirror above the bed, and fresh bedding. We worked with a few things she already owned—her Ikea sheers from 2008, the paint color we applied a while back, and a green-and-tan area rug she’s had for some time—then hunted for complementary options in several price ranges so she could pick what she liked best.
Her brief was concise and funny: “that soothing, mostly-white hotel-room meets Olivia Pope’s bedroom vibe.” We took that as our roadmap, binge-watched a little Scandal with big glasses of red wine, and then got to work. After ordering several items ahead of time, we spent about 24 hours shopping, assembling, and installing everything. Here’s how the space looked when we arrived Saturday morning (bed skirt removed for photos):
- Two clearance pillows from Pier 1 to sit in front of her white shams and add pattern and color.
- A geometric brass-framed mirror to hang above the bed for a subtle hotel-chic look.
- Soft seersucker king-size bedding on clearance to add texture; we like king-size covers on queen beds for extra drape.
- A beaded metallic accent pillow to complement the green tones while echoing brass accents.
- A pair of shapely lamps with brass bases and elegant finials that felt suitably polished.
- A curvy upholstered queen headboard with brass nail-head trim to anchor the room and add sophistication.
- Dapper castered brass side tables that tied in with the other metallic finishes and read as a small splurge.
The last three items were more of a splurge, while the pillows and bedding were bargain-friendly. Mixing high and low items kept the room feeling thoughtful without breaking the bank. With the new headboard, mirror, lamps, and side tables in place—plus the pillows and bedding—we completed the transformation. The changes were immediate: the room felt more polished and even the ceilings seemed higher with the taller headboard and reflective mirror.
The white ceramic lamps on the brass side tables were a simple, elegant touch. Combined with textured bedding and layered pillows, the space now reads calm, elevated, and intentionally designed. It was also satisfying to reuse long-loved items like Carrie’s six-year-old sheer curtains and the existing rug. We placed two faux topiaries on the windowsill as a small housewarming gesture that filled out the window area.
Carrie’s reaction was wonderful. She loved the room, kept thanking us, and texted later to say she didn’t think she’d thanked us enough. Hearing that made the whole effort worth it.
We also photographed a few detail shots to show how a primarily white palette stays interesting through varied textures and finishes. When you go mostly monochrome with small pops of color—like green and gold—varying materials prevents the room from looking flat. For example, in this compact space you can find:
