When Ashley excitedly sent photos of her living room after our mood board makeover, we couldn’t wait to share them. Here’s the note she included:
Well here they are… our AFTER pictures! We love the mood board that you put together for us. It completely helped us in getting the look we wanted. We’re so happy that we replaced most of our hand-me-down furniture with more modern (yet inexpensive) pieces. We (and when I say “we” I really mean my hard-working husband!) repainted, installed new baseboards, had new floors put in, and used your help to bring our 1968 ranch up-to-date! After Ashley reached out, we created a mood board aimed at bringing the space into a cleaner, more contemporary direction while keeping it affordable and livable. The brief was simple: updated furnishings, balanced contrast, and a welcoming family-friendly living room. The mood board guided their purchases and decisions on layout, color, and texture.

And now for the reveal. Here’s what Ashley’s living room looks like after the makeover:

The impact is impressive. New hardwood floors and freshly painted cream walls immediately open and brighten the room, creating a neutral backdrop that makes everything feel intentional. Introducing rich leather seating and dark wood furniture provides depth and a classic touch, while lighter upholstered pieces, a large textured rug, and colorful accessories inject warmth and personality.
The fireplace, though already painted white in the original photos, now feels crisp and integrated rather than out of place. That’s a great example of how coordinated updates elsewhere in a room—new floors, trim, and a cohesive palette—can change how an existing element reads within the space.
Even with a substantial dark-toned entertainment center and two leather sofas anchoring the room, the space stays open and airy. The lighter walls, a roomy ottoman, a pale accent chair, and a soft area rug balance the darker pieces so the room feels inviting rather than heavy. Small pops of color in table lamps, artwork, and glass vases on the mantel bring in visual interest and a cheerful touch.
We especially love the ottoman. It works as a practical centerpiece for entertaining—perfect for trays with snacks and drinks—or as a family hub for games, like an oversized Monopoly board that everyone can gather around. The overall arrangement emphasizes comfort and functionality without sacrificing style.
Ashley and her husband did an excellent job bringing the mood board to life. Thoughtful choices—mixing materials like leather, wood, and textured textiles, and adding layered lighting and art—created a room that feels layered, lived-in, and cohesive. The result demonstrates how strategic, budget-friendly updates can dramatically transform a living space.
