When we visited the Bowers this weekend, we shared a few quick photos of an irresistibly charming children’s bookstore on Instagram Stories. The response was immediate: dozens of messages asking for a proper post so the store wouldn’t disappear from people’s feeds. Located in Monroe, Georgia, it’s called The Story Shop and it might just be the sweetest bookstore you’ll ever see. Believe me, it’s worth the hype.
That grand bookcase, the library ladder, and the globe collection instantly set the tone — it feels like an antiquated library reimagined with a playful, modern touch. A cheerful aqua accent wall brightened the entry (a single wall painted in a Misty Teal-like shade is a great way to add color without overwhelming a room). My favorite entry detail was a small vintage TV tucked under a pink side table with the message “read instead” painted on it in white.
One eye-catching element was the peel-and-stick animal wallpaper used in one space. It’s removable and reportedly easy to install — perfect for a feature wall behind a child’s bed or on a single accent wall. Brightly painted animal trophy heads added character, each decorated with playful accessories like glasses, crowns, or mustaches. Handmade signs nodding to famous literary settings and other small bookish details appeared throughout the shop.
One delightful surprise was an armoire that actually led to a hidden room. Children (and many adults) could walk right through it — a magical, whimsical feature that was a hit with everyone. A secret doorway like this translates wonderfully into a home design concept as well, whether as an entrance to a play space, a closet, or a private nook.
What’s beyond the wardrobe? Not lions or witches, but a giant whale motif leading into the storytelling room — a cozy area designed for read-aloud sessions. The designers cleverly used two matching rugs to fill the floor space instead of one oversized rug, a smart and practical design choice that still feels cohesive and comfortable for gatherings.
There was also a round “Hobbit hole” door that opened into a tiny play nook — a perfect hideaway that kids love. Secret passages, small doors, and unexpected entries add a sense of adventure to any children’s space and are memorable design elements in both retail and residential interiors.
That hobbit hole photo also shows other playful details: a brick wall plastered with paper butterflies and a felt garland strung from driftwood. Small touches like these — crafted decor, fabric garlands, and paper art — add tactile, handmade charm. The shop is full of storybook nods, like a faint shadow of Peter Pan and other literary Easter eggs scattered around.
Kids gravitated immediately to a corner swing hung from the ceiling. It was used carefully and peacefully by children and parents alike, while nearby a charming peaked “bookcase village” showcased stories from around the world. A DIY cityscape of bookshelves or smaller pre-made versions can recreate this whimsical display at home.
One of the most imaginative installations was books suspended from the ceiling, their pages folded to stay fanned open. From below, the effect was enchanting. The shop also carried a thoughtful selection of picture books and biographies, arranged in colorful groupings that begged you to browse and collect.
The clothing and merchandise displays were equally inventive — instead of typical racks, colorful chairs hung from the wall and even featured playful characters perched on them. These unexpected merchandising choices reinforce the shop’s playful aesthetic and make the space feel uniquely curated.
Every piece of art in the store referenced a book or character, reinforcing the message that reading is joyful and imaginative. Hidden nods — a rose under glass, a Cheshire Cat grin painted into a chair, and carefully placed literary prints — rewarded curious eyes and created a cohesive theme throughout the shop.
Colorful hardcover classics lined a shelf in rainbow order, a display that warms the heart of any book lover and invites collecting. Nearby, oversized painted paper flowers and theatrical props continued the storybook atmosphere, creating photo-ready vignettes and immersive corners.
The party room was another highlight. Themed celebrations — like Peter Pan or Alice in Wonderland — are executed with meticulous detail, from labeled thimbles to ticking clocks. Themed parties here feel immersive and special, and the space is obviously designed to delight both children and adults.
Overhead twinkle lights, grass-like wall textures, and string lights combined to create an outdoor courtyard or enchanted tea-party vibe indoors. These lighting and texture choices are easy to adapt to a child’s bedroom, playroom, or reading nook to spark imagination and comfort.
The back of the store continued the witty charm with a clever “employees only” sign that matched the shop’s playful voice. Small theatrical moments and unexpected design choices make the entire space feel hand-crafted and thoughtfully arranged.
