We admit it: we’re suckers for a good before and after. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching an old house get restored to its former glory, especially when it’s a vintage property with character to spare. Mandy and her husband Joe tackled a charming 1901 house in Charlottesville, VA, and their photos of the renovation are a wonderful example of how thoughtful restoration can bring historic homes back to life.
They nicknamed the house “Blanche,” a fitting name for a stately older home that started with excellent bones but had suffered years of neglect. The property required a near-complete gut renovation: removing a precarious deck, clearing an overgrown yard, and filling three dumpsters over several weekends. Early into demolition, Mandy and Joe learned they were expecting a baby, which added an urgent timeline to the project. Despite the pressure, they pushed forward and delivered a beautiful transformation.

Even though they sold the house before fully staging it, the finished result is striking. Landscaping and lawn work were completed by the buyer, but the renovation photos still show a complete interior and exterior revival.
The couple prioritized preserving and restoring original features where possible: baseboards, trim, mantels, and doors were rehabbed and reused. Years of layered wallpaper were stripped away, though an earlier decorative border along the stairway was a fun reminder of the house’s past.
The demolition phase exposed the original structure and revealed opportunities to reimagine layouts while keeping the home’s historic character intact.
The finished foyer uses a classic palette of gray, brown, and white paired with matte finishes and warm wood tones. A striking wooden back door with a tall glass pane draws the eye, and a sliding door with a transom adds architectural interest. The light fixture in the entry was a smart salvage find that complements the restored millwork.
One of the standout details is the original millwork that survived alongside the staircase. Preserving those elements—along with refinished hardwood floors, stairs, and handrails—helps maintain the home’s authentic feel. The team refinished the old pine throughout the house, enhancing its warm, original character.
The dining room shows thoughtful additions that feel period-appropriate. A new mantel was installed in front of the original chimney, and built-in cabinets with glass doors and marble tops add elegance and storage while respecting the home’s history. Transom windows and preserved trim complete the look.
The kitchen is another highlight. By borrowing space from the attic, they created an arched ceiling covered in reclaimed wood boards salvaged from the house during demo. Combined with stone floors, marble counters, and salvaged antique light fixtures, the kitchen blends rustic warmth with classic materials.
The back mudroom is a practical and stylish addition. Reclaimed elements were used whenever original pieces were missing, including a tin ceiling sourced from a restaurant and vintage lighting found through salvage channels. These reused materials add layers of history and charm.
The upstairs hallway was opened up for more light and a built-in bench beneath generous windows. The result is a bright, welcoming passage that feels intentional and comfortable.
Bedrooms benefitted from restored trim and creative use of existing ceiling heights. Small details like original rosettes around windows were preserved and celebrated, adding authentic historic charm.
Bathrooms received careful period-appropriate updates. Vintage sinks and working original faucets were sourced from local Craigslist finds and salvage, while decorative touches—like an antique frosted window added for flair—enhanced character without sacrificing function.
