Transform a Mustard Yellow Attic into Soft Blue

I don’t think you’d be able to stomach any of the “before” clutter after one look at this Reader Redesign from Annastazia. But before we dive into the dramatic transformation, here’s her note in her own words:

Hi John and Sherry — I’ve been reading your blog for a while and I’m so inspired by your style and your ranch home. Stairs and second levels are overrated in my book. Your bedroom design gave me the breakthrough I needed when I was stuck planning our own small, low-ceilinged bedroom. The ceilings slope down to about four feet at one side, and fitting furniture felt impossible. I knew I wanted pale blue walls and a black-and-white palette, but beyond that I was blank. Seeing your hotel-inspired bedroom makeover cleared my designer’s block. I chose low-to-the-floor furniture to make the room feel taller, and IKEA provided the perfect pieces, curtains and lamps to capture that hotel-room vibe. It feels like a completely new space — like sleeping in a luxury hotel — and I have you to thank!

Annastazia, you’re a star. Your thoughtful approach and hard work turned a cramped space into a serene, stylish bedroom. Below is the original “before” photo so you can appreciate the full extent of the makeover:

The after photos show a complete shift in scale, style and mood. The pale blue walls and black-and-white accents create a calm, hotel-inspired atmosphere. Low-profile furniture pulls the sightline upward, minimizing the effect of the sloped ceiling and making the room feel taller and more open:

One charming detail: Annastazia used IKEA’s Malm series for both the bed and the dresser — the same collection we have in our own bedroom (albeit in a different finish). It’s a reminder that smart, well-priced pieces can be the backbone of a cohesive bedroom redesign. Using consistent finishes and clean lines helps small rooms feel curated instead of cluttered.

Here are the practical lessons from this successful small-bedroom makeover, useful for anyone facing sloped ceilings or confined space:

  • Choose low-profile furniture: Placing the bed and storage on a lower plane reduces the visual bulk of furniture and opens sightlines toward the ceiling’s highest points.
  • Keep the color palette light and restrained: Pale blues, whites and black accents create contrast without overwhelming the room; a hotel-inspired palette adds calm and cohesion.
  • Use consistent furniture lines: Matching series or complementary finishes unify the space, making it feel intentional and organized.
  • Layer lighting: Lamps, ambient lighting and task lights all contribute to a warm, hotel-like atmosphere that feels luxe even on a budget.
  • Maximize vertical sightlines: Avoid tall, heavy pieces that draw attention to the low part of a sloped ceiling; instead, emphasize horizontal lines and lower furnishings.
  • Textiles matter: Curtains, bedding and accent pillows in coordinated fabrics reinforce the design and add softness to angled architecture.

This makeover is a great example of how thoughtful design choices — not just expensive purchases — transform a challenging room into a relaxing retreat. Annastazia’s approach focused on proportion, color and texture to create a serene, hotel-inspired bedroom in a modest footprint.
