Budget-Friendly Guest Bathroom Makeover: Before and After

When Carol emailed us about her budget-friendly bathroom project, we were excited to share her straightforward, effective approach to updating a yellow-fixtured guest bath. Her remodel is a great example of how small, well-chosen changes can transform a dated space without breaking the bank. Below is her note describing the work and the practical decisions she made.

Love your website and your design boards. Your links to quality, affordable furnishings and accessories at places like Target, Walmart and JC Penney are so helpful. Here’s what I did to my guest bathroom that I lived with for too long. The before pictures show a fishing theme with a plaid yellow and green curtain we used to try to blend with the aged yellow floor tile and sinks.

It was fairly inexpensive to have a handyman replace the old yellow sinks with classic white ones and install new nickel faucets from Lowe’s. Peel-and-stick vinyl tiles from Lowe’s made a world of difference when applied right over the existing yellow floor tile. Benjamin Moore Philadelphia Cream paint warmed the walls, and a simple bamboo shade added texture. Fluffy cream towels and rugs plus a white waffle-weave shower curtain from Target helped achieve the neutral, spa-like look I was aiming for.

I removed a sliding shower enclosure from the tub and installed a curved shower curtain rod from Lowe’s to give the shower a more open feel (the white curtain also hides the yellow tub, which still needs reglazing). We’re glad we updated the room while staying within a limited budget. Down the road we’d like to remove the full-length mirror, but for now we’re saving our pennies. – Carol

Removing the sliding shower enclosure and adding a curved rod visually expands the shower area, making the small guest bath feel more open.
