I’m thrilled to share this project—hands down my favorite transformation so far. We created a fresh, functional laundry nook on a tight budget, and the result completely changed how that corner of our home feels and works. The best part? I don’t even do the laundry—this space is a win for the whole household.
When we started, the old bi-fold doors and the narrow wall next to the sunroom door made the hallway feel cramped and wasted valuable space. Opening that area up and rethinking the layout gave us the chance to build a compact but highly useful laundry nook that looks much cleaner and more intentional than before.
After the makeover, the new laundry nook is bright, organized, and surprisingly stylish for such a small investment.
We focused on three affordable elements that together created a cohesive, functional space:
- a painted and finished plywood counter
- two large simplified frames serving as decorative backing and concealment
- two bamboo blinds to hide the top storage shelf
The counter was a simple DIY: a sheet of plywood cut to size, sanded, painted, and sealed with polyurethane for durability. It provides a stable surface for folding and staging laundry without the cost of a custom countertop. For style and to hide unsightly outlets, pipes, and miscellaneous wall details, we leaned two oversized frames against the back wall. Each frame holds inexpensive patterned paper to mimic art and add a finished look without an expensive purchase.
To keep the open shelf above the machines from looking cluttered, we installed two matching bamboo blinds. They tuck neatly above the counter and can be lowered to conceal storage items when needed, creating a cleaner visual line and a more polished appearance overall.
Another small but impactful addition was a slim rolling storage caddy we found at Target for under twenty dollars. The caddy fits perfectly between the washer and dryer and stores detergents, brushes, and other cleaning essentials in an organized, easy-to-access way. This little mobile unit keeps the counter clear and helps maintain order in a compact space.
Overall, this budget-friendly laundry nook makeover proves that small upgrades and simple DIY elements can dramatically improve both the look and function of tight spaces. By combining a durable DIY countertop, decorative frames that double as concealment, and practical window treatments and storage, we created a tidy, attractive laundry area without a major renovation budget.
