We’re thrilled to take part in the 48-Hour Challenge with Better Homes & Gardens and The Home Depot. The concept is simple and exciting: five of their favorite home and garden bloggers were invited to design smart, weekend-ready outdoor living projects using a $500 materials budget from The Home Depot. We’re honored to be included and can’t wait to get started. Already, we’ve made a quick scouting trip through The Home Depot and picked up several starting pieces to inspire the porch makeover. We’ve done small, budget-friendly updates in the past—spray-painted chairs and freshly painted wood planters gave our porch a quick lift—but this challenge gives us the chance to take the space further. We’ve gathered material samples, new seating options, paint swatches, and hardware for a few simple builds. Those items are currently staged in our sunroom as we finalize the plan and map out the weekend timeline.
Our plan for the porch is practical, attractive, and very much weekend-ready. At the center of the update will be a few comfortable, weather-resistant seating pieces to make the space more inviting. We’ll refresh surfaces with paint for a clean, cohesive palette, and we’ll add small, purposeful accents that boost functionality—like a compact side table that we’ll show you how to assemble in about two minutes. We’re also planning a cozy “burger zone” for casual dining outdoors, with a durable tray or small tabletop that can hold condiments, plates, and a portable grill or burner.
Beyond the big-picture pieces, we’ll be doing a handful of straightforward DIY builds and finishing touches to stretch the budget and personalize the porch. Expect a few inexpensive carpentry projects—simple planters, a quick bench upgrade, and a lightweight table design that can be built with basic tools. We’ll also demonstrate smart paint techniques for neat edges and crisp lines so your results look polished without extravagant effort or cost.
Throughout April we’ll be documenting our preparation process on BHG.com, including the shopping decisions, the step-by-step builds, and the tools and materials we recommend. During the 48-hour makeover we’ll share live updates and practical progress reports so you can follow along in real time. Then, in early May, we’ll reveal the finished porch and walk through each element—what worked, what we learned, and tips for adapting the project to different spaces and budgets.
We’re excited for the two-day transformation. There will certainly be a lot of hard work, some sweat, and hopefully only happy tears when we step back and see the result. No promises about zero bandages—DIY usually involves at least a small nick or two—but we’ll aim for clean progress and safe techniques.
