Why You’re Unaware of Your Shopping Habits

We recently made two significant changes to how we shop, and both have produced good and not-so-good results. In this post we’ll explain what we changed, why we did it, and how we’re addressing a few small problems that surfaced. Along the way we were reminded that it’s perfectly fine not to be great at everything—especially in a social-media world where everyone seems to have it all figured out. We’ll also share a tense moment at the duplex that we almost didn’t notice, a new organizing tool we’ve become obsessed with, and Sherry’s ongoing love affair with a particular crunchy snack.

What’s New

  • If you want background on our decision to cancel Amazon Prime and the math behind it, check out Episode #60 (around the four-minute mark). We also discussed our No Spend Month in Episode #97.
  • Target had adorable corn holders, but the price for just a few pairs felt excessive for stocking the duplex. We found an inexpensive bulk option online that made more sense for our needs.
  • We also purchased the beach chairs and umbrellas we originally bought for our beach house to use at the duplex. These chairs are well made, comfortable, and practical—built-in cup and phone holders, two zippered storage pockets (one insulated), and backpack straps for carrying. They were a great value, especially when found in-store.

  • Sherry has become absolutely obsessed with a snack called Pistachio Squares. Costco didn’t list them online, so we linked to where they can be found elsewhere.

That’s Embarrassing

  • Our downstairs HVAC systems sit under the stairs on both sides of the duplex, and their humming was getting louder near the TV. It was actually even louder when we opened the locked owner’s closet beside that area—the place where the units are accessed.
  • After sending video to the HVAC installer, we were worried the motor was broken. Fortunately the “problem” turned out to be the instruction manual one of their installers had left inside the unit. A relieved win for us.

It’s Okay Not To Be Good At Everything

  • I recently read a New York Times piece that resonated: school is often the only place that expects you to excel at everything simultaneously. In real life you usually shine in a few areas and rely on others for the rest. That perspective helped me let go of a lot of self-imposed pressure.
  • If you missed it, we chatted recently about our shortcomings in the kitchen on our podcast Episode #142.

We’re Digging

  • We discovered a simple label maker that’s become a small obsession. It cost about $15 and includes a basic white label and black ink cartridge; we also picked up a few extra cartridges. Labeling has made the duplex’s storage feel calmer and easier to maintain.
  • We previously spoke with The Home Edit about professional organization tips (including labeling) in Episode #60—those ideas still influence how we arrange things today.
  • Sherry also bought a brow product from Glossier that she’s been testing. She plans to show how it works in an Instagram story this week, and you’ll be able to see some side-by-side photos soon.
  • On a lighter note, we referenced Martha & Snoop Dogg in a recent conversation and remembered how much fun that show was.

If you’re trying to recall a product or tip we mentioned in an earlier episode, we keep a master list of everything we’ve recommended from our past shows. We also maintain a Book Club page listing all the books we’ve discussed and recommended.
