How We Chose the Perfect Jute Rug for Our Large Bedroom

Short version: we bought a bedroom rug. The longer version: we spent more time thinking about rug size, material, and purchase options than you might expect, but it was worth it.

Our new bedroom is large and needed something to ground the scale—something that would sit under Ed the Bed and complement our oversized pendant light. A small 4 x 6 rug at the foot of the bed plus a couple of faux sheepskins beside it no longer felt sufficient. For context, our bedroom measures about 16 x 16 feet, and if you include the sink nook it’s closer to 16 x 21 feet. That’s a big jump compared to our previous 11 x 12 room, which had a 6 x 9 jute rug.

To visualize the right size, we taped out rug dimensions on the floor with painter’s tape. It’s an easy, inexpensive method to preview scale before making a purchase, and it confirmed that an 8 x 10 rug would be a good fit. We plan to place the rug horizontally under the bed and will explain the layout in more detail in a future update.

Next came the decision on material. We favor natural fibers for rugs: they tend to be durable, low-odor, and relatively simple to maintain. That narrowed our choices to two main directions—a plush white shag wool rug or a softer braided jute. After considering care, durability, and how each option would perform in daily life (we have both a dog and a baby), we leaned toward jute. We’ve had jute rugs in our previous home and still use one in our current sunroom; they’re sturdy, easy to clean—usually just a shake-out or occasional vacuum—and their natural tones hide dirt and resist stains better than many light-colored rugs.

Cost was also a factor. Jute is typically much less expensive than wool, which helped our decision. A large white wool rug would have been luxurious, but we worried about visible stains and how it would coordinate with Ed the Bed, which is white. Choosing a non-white rug lets the bed remain a focal point while the rug supports the room’s overall palette.

We intentionally avoided bold patterns for the rug. With a loud duvet, a dramatic pendant, green-yellow curtains, and a graphic four-poster bed all competing for attention, we wanted the rug to play a supporting role—subtle and textural rather than attention-grabbing.

After narrowing our specs to an 8 x 10 jute rug, we compared three budget-friendly options, all under about $350. The first was an Overstock listing priced around $224 with minimal shipping. The second was on sale from West Elm for roughly $229 plus shipping, and the third was a clearance find at Pottery Barn for $199 plus delivery fees. Each had a slightly different look, but we were drawn to the Pottery Barn rug’s subtle tone-on-tone diamond pattern and softer braided texture.

When comparing online versus in-store purchase, one important consideration was returns and availability. The Pottery Barn clearance price was only available online; in-store the same rug was marked $249. We also noticed the online item had a longer delivery window and limited return terms if the color or texture didn’t match our expectations.

Ultimately we chose convenience and certainty over the lowest possible price. Although the in-store price was $25 higher, the rug was available immediately and fully returnable at the store. We borrowed a larger car, drove to the Pottery Barn, and brought the rug home that day for $249. It felt worth paying a little more to avoid months of waiting and potential shipping complications.

Now it’s partially unrolled in our bedroom and feels much softer than our previous jute rug—definitely an upgrade. The warm tone complements our wide plank floors and the diamond pattern adds subtle interest without overpowering the room’s other elements. We’re happy with the choice and can’t wait to share photos of the finished layout.
