Although our Karlstad sectional was scheduled to arrive on February 4th, it showed up early, which was a pleasant surprise. As first-time Ikea couch owners, we were surprised by the number of boxes it arrived in, but also excited to start assembling it right away.
We dove into the build with the usual Ikea determination. The assembly took longer than we expected, so we even filmed a time-lapse of the process for reference. For anyone who prefers a quick read instead of watching a video, here’s a concise review of the finished sectional and how it’s fitting into our home.
First impressions: the fabric is durable and pet-friendly. Our dog Burger’s claws don’t seem to bother it, and the deep charcoal slipcover hides stains and spills well—an important trait in a house with a dog and a baby. The fact that the entire sectional, including the arms and frame, is slipcovered makes it easy to remove and wash if needed, which gives us peace of mind.
Karlstad is a large, comfortable sofa. It took a little while to get used to how much more presence it adds compared to our old couch, but it didn’t take long for it to become our favorite spot. The charcoal color anchors the room, the sectional fills the space nicely, and the comfort level makes it perfect for long evenings and family movie nights.
Because Karlstad is substantial, it also revealed areas of the room that need additional attention. The space feels oversized for a single sofa, so larger-scale accessories will balance the layout—think a bigger rug, a new media cabinet, and more art on the walls. The corner near the window currently holds a small game table, but we’re considering converting that zone into a play or toy storage area for Clara and future children. The natural light makes it an ideal spot for playtime.
We’re planning to add a long, narrow console table behind the sectional to host lamps and provide a handy spot for drinks. Our current ottoman setup—a nailhead, faux sheepskin round ottoman next to the dark, squared sectional—looks great, but it’s not especially functional. A console table behind the sofa would allow the ottoman to remain primarily decorative and foot-friendly while offering surface space for everyday use. It’s also a safer choice for a home with a curious toddler compared to an angular coffee table.
We’re also considering a DIY upgrade to Karlstad’s legs. Ikea offers sleeker metal options, but we like the chunky wooden legs that came with our sectional for support. That said, the wood finish feels a bit light for the deep charcoal slipcover, so we may stain or paint the legs darker—possibly even try a high-gloss finish—to make them look richer and more intentional. We thought about swapping to tapered or spindle legs, but because Karlstad is a heavy, supportive piece, we value keeping legs that promise stability and durability.
Functionally, the new sectional is a win. I can lie fully stretched out across one section, Clara loves the deep corners for propping up and reading, and the chaise is perfectly sized for Sherry—who has already claimed it as her spot. Burger the dog has adopted the sectional as his new kingdom, finding every cushion and crevice to curl up in, perch on, or use as a lookout for backyard squirrels. It’s become a hub of activity and relaxation for our whole family.
There’s still a to-do list for the room: stain or paint the ceiling beams, add a sofa table behind the sectional, invest in a larger rug, upgrade the media cabinet, replace the ceiling fans with more appropriate lighting, and carve out a small play area behind the sofa for Clara. We’re in no rush to complete everything at once; we prefer letting the space evolve thoughtfully rather than making impulsive purchases. Budget considerations also mean we’ll tackle projects one at a time.
Overall, we’re very happy with Karlstad. It provides comfort, durability, and a modern look that suits our family’s needs. It’s the kind of furniture that invites guests to linger and makes everyday life more comfortable. We’ll update the space gradually and share how those changes come together as we refine the room around this new central piece.
